1962 Ford Thunderbird Coupe

This body shape of Ford's iconic “Personal Luxury” car is sometimes referred to as the “Bullet Bird” or the “Cigar Bird”. Available only for the 1962 and 1963 model years. before being replaced by the model made famous by the Thelma & Louise movie.

Quite frankly. the styling is magnificent and represents a period of tremendous confidence in the American auto industry. The jet age was taking off. literally. and moon missions were in the planning. It is no coincidence that the rear lights of this car look like jet turbines on after-burn. or even a rocket ship rooster tail. But my favourite detail of these cars is the bright work strip (stainless steel) which runs the full length of the car from the headlamps to the rear lamp – notice how this same stainless steel strip actually forms the door handle pull. How cool is that?! Oh. and the way it cruises down the motorway …. Just sublime.

We bought this gorgeous classic from an architect in Albuquerque. New Mexico. about a year ago. For the price that we paid for this terrific example. we could NOT purchase and import another one now for the equivalent of the above asking price.

The architect was an absolute stickler for detail. This T-Bird comes with just about the most thorough history file I have ever seen. It is so rare to get any history and restoration records / photos when buying an American classic car. but the file with this car is worthy of a trophy by itself!

Here are some bullet points about our bullet bird:

First sold in California in 1961 as a 1962 model – this is a genuine California black plate car

Sold to Michael Messier of San Ramon Ca. in March 1996

First restoration receipt dates from 1996

Last restoration receipt for Mr. Messier was July 2001

Believed that the restoration was put on hold due to ill health

Car sold as work in progress to Kevin Koliboski of Mesa. Arizona. December 2006

Odomoter reading in December 2006: 30. 96 miles

First restoration receipt for Mr. Koliboski: January 2007

New glass installed August 2007

Thorough. detailed records of the engine start up procedure. February 2008

Sold to Dan Brasso of Tulsa Oklahoma July 2009

Purchased by architect. Trest Pollina of Albuquerque NM in December 2010

Odometer reading in December 2010: 41. 13

Sold to Alan Mills of ENGLAND. October 2015 with 43. 45 miles on the clock

When Trest Pollina bought this car he received receipts totalling $23. 03. 68 comprising of:

Engine & transmission rebuild $7869. 13

Suspension and brakes $5424. 02

Body & interior $9227. 86

Misc. $482. 67

Whilst the car was in his ownership. Trest spent a further $3401. 77 on all manner of parts. The list is too long to add here. but come and see the car and see the file and you will weep at the detail!

Everything has been attended to on this car and no corners cut. The original colour was a pale blue called Diamond Blue with a light pearl beige vinyl interior. The interior has been replaced with reproduction parts throughout in the original colour while the paint is now Deep Sea Blue metallic. which was an option back in 1962. We have the complete vin number and data plate breakdown in the file.

This T-Bird is in lovely condition. it is very useable. is RUST FREE. drives beautifully and is a sound investment.  The mileage currently reads approximately 44. 00 odd. So she has around 14k miles on the restoration and rebuilt drive train. I intend to increase this figure at every opportunity because it is a dream to drive! You will not be disappointed. Everything works except the radio and the clock. Parts supply for these cars is about as good as for Mustangs with lots of reliable companies Stateside and just about everything available. You can even buy the radios. or have them upgraded to a modern spec but with the original appearance.

It had a new MOT two weeks ago with no advisories.

Definitely not the cheapest coupe available. but this car is honest. and fully sorted. It is 55 years old but has been a dry state car its whole life and is rust free. In our ownership it has been thoroughly pampered as part of our collection and hasn't so much as seen a wet sponge! You could not buy a lesser car and restore it to this standard for this money. With the current exchange rates. you certainly couldn't import one this good from the States.

With the £ / € where it is today. this car is an absolute bargain for European buyers.

Sieze this opportunity now. before we change our minds!

Please note that we are not dealers. We are passionate collectors and our collection has become a little too big. so it is time to make some room! We are not looking for a part exchange and cannot offer credit card or finance facilities. We are private individuals with a passion for classic American cars.
