VAUXHALL HS CHEVETTE 16 VALVE TWIN CAM - EX PRESS AND VAUXHALL FLEET CAR - FIRST HS CHEVETTE BUILT LATE 1977
This car is the first ever HS built at Luton - it was the first car after the pre-production prototypes and was the first HS fleet car built by Vauxhall ahead of the main production run in 1978. The car has a fully documented history and is even the road car in the Graham Robson book Vauxhall Chevette HS and HSR (there are 5 pictures of the car in the book and a copy of the book will be supplied with the car).
The car was owned by Vauxhall as a press & fleet car from its creation in late 1977 through to September 1980. We have a letter on file from the PR Department giving the background of the car and the letter is even signed by one of the people who drove the car at Vauxhall. The car hen changed hands in September 1980. March 1981. May 1982. October 1982. March 1983. April 1985 and August 1987. It then fell into two periods of long term ownership - the first from August 1987 to November 2004 and the second from November 2004 to date (Our father and then son ownership). We have a full log book record of all keepers from new. The earliest MOT certificate is back to 1983 and shows 27. 24 miles. then by 1985 32. 50 miles. then 49. 87 miles in 1987. 57828 in 1988. after which the car was taken off the road with its current mileage of 63. 54. SO this mileage is clearly genuine as the car had not been on the road until the end of this year for 28 years. DVLA records confirm this too.
This is a genuine piece of motoring history and probably one of the best HS's available. It has been fully restored professionally under our stewardship over the last 6 months. The car is truly immaculate and has kept all of the special features only the first one or two cars had. These include black door and windows surrounds (all subsequent production Chevettes were silver). Sundym front windows only (they always were in this car); A CHEVETTE badge in front of the HS decal on the boot; A black removal panel (subsequent cars were silver); Original VEGA wheels with flat washer receptors for the wheel nuts - all subsequent wheels used cone nuts; No door mirrors - not even on the drivers side. meaning the door trim is continuous with no mirror break; Electric fuel pump with purpose fitted isolation switch - no other HS's had this; Button starter; black headlight bezels - although this car and all subsequent HS's were silver. the DTV cars were black.
Works we have completed included in the full and complete stripping of all components from the car - it was taken back to a bare shell:
Shell - The original shell was in remarkable condition - any rot was removed and GENUINE Vauxhall panels used - this was sills. rear wheel arches and front floors. The front panel and front wings were also removed. as were all the doors. bonnet and tailgate. The lot were blasted back to bare metal where required. etched primed. made smooth and then given multiple coats of primer and top coat. The original Silver Metallic paint has been used. then lacquered. New stripes were applies. trims repainted and re-fitted. The car has always been a non-sunroof car. The removable panel is in place in black.
Interior - All the interior was removed and checked and where necessary the trim was tidied - the car has the ORIGINAL interior in it still - we had to repair a section of front seat and a small cut to the rear seat - these have been done by a professional upholsterer and preserve the originality. The carpets are the original - the boot carpet is tired with marks and could do with replacing. but we have respected the originality. The car had a Mountney steering wheel when it came to us. so that's still fitted but could do with replacing with an original HS one. The door cards had period speakers in. so we have left them in. There is no stereo. but there is wiring for one. The dash and console and all gauges are in excellent order. It has the correct black HS headlining and matching sun visors. New tailgate struts are fitted. The car has the correct black door handles. The rear turret covers are the correct original ones. The front seats are the headrest type. The tartan is all original and not faded horribly either.   The car has a brand new Pilkington windscreen fitted and the correct black rubber seals all round.
Running Gear - The front sub frame has been off the car. stripped. repainted and rebuilt with all new parts as required - bushes. gaiters. bearings. ball joints. TR ends. etc. The rack was overhauled too. The brakes have been stripped and rebuilt - calipers. discs. pads. new brake lines etc. The master cylinder is brand new with new seals - the splitter unit has been overhauled too. The rear axle has been overhauled. new brake lines. cables. cylinders. shoes. etc. as required. The springs and shock absorbers on the car had been renewed just prior to our ownership. so they have been repainted and refitted. All the wheels have been stripped and repainted in the correct HS wheel colour and new chrome nuts fitted. The 4 on the car are the original flat washer type - the spare is a cone nut type. so 4 nuts are included for that too. 5 new tyres were also fitted. The gearbox has been inspected. but had been rebuilt prior to our ownership and is in excellent condition and is very crisp. It is running the correct GTE axle with torque tube set up.
Engine - the engine has been out of the bay. the engine bay completely stripped and all components overhauled or refreshed as necessary - it has been detailed up very nicely. but not overdone. The engine was fully rebuilt by John Noble at Noble Mellors some time post the original layup and will need running in. It has been stripped and fully checked. The fuel tank has been chemically cleaned and all lines refreshed. It is a recessed block with recessed works gasket. painted in the original DTV works red. with new cams. valves. pistons. bearings. gaskets all round. HP oil pump. new oil cooler. refurbished dizzy (points & condenser). new leads. plugs. filters. etc. . twin 48 Dellortos. Correct original Janspeed 4-branch exhaust system. all refurbished and upgraded as required. new WOSP high torque starter. new HD 3-piece clutch. balanced flywheel. Reconditioned wide core radiator with switchable electric fan. electric fuel pump in boot. DTV air box with trumpets and gauzes. this has been dyno-tuned and set up in the car - producing circa 200 BHP - so it is quick! The engine and transmission is basically ready to be run in.
We are currently finishing the car and doing the final fettling - the original bumper rubbers including front air dam end caps are present and will be fitted. shut lines checked and general finalising set up. The bonnet stay was missing so we made a temporary ne. but a correct one has been located and will come with the car. The original rear mud flaps are with the car and will be fitted if they are deemed good enough.
Faults - very few as you would expect - the rear seat has been professional repaired; the steering wheel is a Mountney and should be a Vauxhall type (I may have one by the time the car is sold); the boot carpet is original but tired; the fuse board cover was not on the car. so we will try to locate one; that's about it.
This car is as close to the new specification when it left the factory and is in immaculate condition. It has the best possible provenance of any HS and is a one off. It is MOT's until October 2017 and will qualify for free road tax in 2018 too. If you buy this car you will have made an excellent investment that will be the envy of many. is highly likely to be a sound one too as these cars a rising in value fast and you can have a lot of fun with it too - you will be welcomed at virtually any classic show with open arms.
The car is currently in Chesterfield being fettled and finished. so can be viewed there for the next few days if required. We have the full history file with us too and the V5 is current and in our names. Thanks for looking and give us a bell or message if you are genuinely interested in the car. We have priced it fairly for what it is and still below what a few have made or advertised for recently. Thanks for looking. 07989 979890.

Comments and questions to the seller:

from Andy, dated 27 september 2018
Funnily enough, if that's the road test car, I drove it for Hot Car magazine back in the 1980s. Very entertaining but got a flat tyre.
Good luck with the sale - looks lovely,

Andy Kirk
