1940 CHRYSLER NEW YORKER CONVERTIBLE

The New Yorker name plate helped define Chrysler as a maker of upscale models. priced and equipped above mainstream brands. Initially introduced in 1938. the New Yorker would appear continuously for the next 58 years. It is the longest running American car name plate. This was a well done restoration probably done in the 1990's. It appears it was a very complete car to begin with. Chrysler built two different models in a convertible in 1940.  The Windsor convertible was moderately priced with a 6 cylinder engine and 2. 52 were built.  This car is one of only 85 New Yorker convertibles built and they all had the more powerful 8 cylinder.

The paint was done many years ago and still holds up very well with few chips and no rust bubbles on the lower panels that usually show up over the years.   There is no apparent rust on the undercarriage or frame.   The doors fit and shut beautifully.   The sides are straight.   The glass is in nice condition with wind wings.   The rubber moldings were replaced and still soft.   The chrome overall is nice with no corrosion or pitting.

The 8-cylinder engine starts and runs like a watch.   The fluids have been refreshed.   The transmission works well and the Chrysler fluid drive is operational and very innovative for the time. (see picture) The suspension and brakes are in good working order. drives fine at 55 MPH and still feels tight.

The period correct leather interior has been done in the past year.   Very nice fit and finish in the workmanship.   The dark blue convertible top is new and operates up and down.   The carpets are new.   The dash is complete and original.   The headlights. turn signals. parking lights. brake lights. and tail lights work well.   The original instruments work correctly including the speedometer.   The gas gauge does not work.   It had a new wiring harness when restored.   The heater and horn work. the radio comes on but is scratchy.

The white wall tires have minimum wear.  There is no jack or spare.   It has the owner's manual. 1940 parts manual. fluid drive manual. build sheet. 1940 shop manual. original showroom brochure and accessory manual.

1940 is the first year for the New Yorker as a stand-alone model.  The New Yorker fell under the Imperial brand in 1938 and 1939.   Overall a really nice car.   Drive it anywhere.
