Be sure to see our other collector car ads on Ebay especially the 1937 Ford original car that is also being offered at an unbelievable end the auction price!

If you are looking at this Austin Healey you probably already know a lot about it.   But some stories are so good that they are worth telling again.    The birth of Austin Healey was created by Austin Motor Car Company. a division of British Motor Corporation (BMC) and Donald Healey Motor Company. a renowned automotive and engineering design firm.   The first four cylinder Healeys came out in 1954.   The 1954 Healey of course was a true sports car but rather crude.   It did not have rollup windows it had side curtains and gave a very rough ride and was considered by even the standards of the day to be quite noisy.   That being said the general public just loved the lines of the 1954 Austin Healey and it made a hit in the UK and all of Europe but also in the United States.   It actually handled quite well and was used quite extensively for racing.   When the 1954 Austin Healey car was imported into the United States it was considered somewhat of an oddity and would be used by US buyers as a car for short weekend jaunt.   It was definitely uncomfortable. noisy and leaked a ton of water in the rain and generally wasn't too practical for taking any kind of cruise.   This car is located in the North Eastern United States.

The new model. the 1964 Austin Healey 3000 roadster followed the original 1954 Healey.   It was obvious to the Austin Motor Car Company as well as Donald Healey that more creature comforts would be greatly appreciated and would help the car sell in greater numbers.   Besides that there was a more powerful six-cylinder engine for increased torque and acceleration and also for quiet high speed cruising.   These factors made the car even more desirable.   The new Austin Healey six cylinder with a full convertible top. roll up windows and all the creature comforts sold like hotcakes in the US. Many were raced and not taken care of leaving very few decent six cylinders Austin Healeys for the future collectors.

The car that you see before you is owned by a lady who fell in love with the car and turned it over to a restoration shop and spent a ton of money on it.   In fact she spent so much money on it that the reserve could be well less then half of what the restoration cost was.   This is a car that has been enjoyed and driven but it is in good running condition and has always been babied.   It is not a show car but a very. very nice street car.   The car starts. stops and runs as it should (does have a 4th gear synchro spring problem).

THE FOLLOWING IS IN THE LADY OWNER'S OWN WORDS:

The car had approximately 76. 00 miles before the restoration was done. Afterwards the odometer was reset to zero. I've only put on 680 miles since the restoration.

I've got a stack of paid shop bills an inch thick. dating from 1991 until 2008.

I purchased the Healey in 1990 from a local business in Maine that restored classic cars. The owner of that business. a mechanic. had purchased the car from California for his own use. but decided to sell it to me instead when I fell in love with it one fateful summer day. I drove it "as is" for about 5 years. It looked great. but during that time there were minor repairs. a new clutch and an engine overhaul. Then. nbsp;after 5 years the electrics failed. and the recommendation was to restore the body. since it "had to be taken apart " to put in a new harness. They took it down to bare metal and hundreds of pieces.

The body restoration was done on a time and materials basis. took years. and cost far beyond what I'd imagined. During that time I underwent a divorce. built a house and raised 2 children. stopped work on it for maybe a year.

The car runs well. very smooth and powerful (too powerful for an old woman!) although it can slip out of 4th gear without acceleration unless I hold my finger on the shift knob. The AM British radio does not work. although there is an antenna. The tachometer does not work. The edge of the passenger side door has a couple of chips.

I hand delivered all the chrome to Zenith electroplating company in Halifax Nova Scotia who did a good job. The upholstery. wooden dashboard and carpet are new.   There is a brand new Tonneau cover. new tires. an owner's manual and a shop manual.

In regards to my 1964 Healey 3000 BJ8 in good shape. It's BRG. was restored. but for the 5 years since it's not been driven much.   It has been kept covered over in my garage. started up but not driven much in the last two years.

YES - THE CAR DOES HAVE WORKING ELECTRIC OVERDRIVE.

We suggest that you check out the pictures and bid with confidence.   Should you win. your summer and fall driving season will be more fun then you can imagine.

Six cylinder Austin Healeys are known for their torquey engines and creature comforts.   Of course it is taken for granted that Austin Healey's handle far better then most English and European cars of the day.   Austin Healey six cylinders have become extremely popular; especially the early six cylinder models and the prices have been skyrocketing in what would otherwise be considered a soft current collector market.   This just goes to show that these cars are being held in higher esteem every day by serious car collectors.

INTERNET RESEARCH (most of which applies to this car).

The 3000 Mark III was launched in October 1963. and remained in production until the end of 1967 when production of Austin-Healeys ceased. (One further car was built in March 1968. ) Classified as the BJ8. the new model was the most powerful and luxurious of the big Healeys. with a walnut veneer dash. wind-up windows. and a 150 hp (112 kW) engine. Improvements to the engine included a new camshaft and valve springs. and twin SU 2" HD8 carburetors. together with a new design of exhaust system. Servo-assisted brakes were now fitted as standard. Only 2+2 seat versions were made. A total of 17. 12 were made.

The car's bodywork was made by Jensen Motors. and the vehicles were assembled at the BMC Abingdon works.

The 3000 was a successful car. which won its class in many European rallies in its heyday. and is still used in competition by enthusiasts today.

148 bhp. 2. 12 cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine. four-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive. coil spring independent front suspension. live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. and hydraulic front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 91. 7"

Donald Healey's four-cylinder Healey Hundred was a sensation at the 1952 London Motor Show. impressing Austin's Leonard Lord. who promptly put it into production as the Austin-Healey. Successively upgraded. it received six-cylinder power in 1956. but it was the three-liter 3000 Mark III of 1964-1968 that became the archetypal “Big Healey. ”

There's no single. obvious reason for the car's spike in values. Some Healey experts in an article from 2008 stated that they believe one of the factors is the sharp rise in the cost of restoration; bringing a $20. 00 project car to show condition is likely to cost as much as $80. 00. And then there's the coattail effect created by the rise in prices of more desirable cars--E-Type roadsters. for example. or open Aston Martins. Priced out of those markets. buyers begin turning to alternative cars like the 3000. In fact. Austin-Healey values have climbed more steeply than the E-Type's. rising from half the Jaguar's value 10 years ago to about 75 percent today.

There's no doubt that the 3000s. like the rest of the big Healeys. have a timeless charm about them. and simply ooze with British character.    They are just fantastic looking cars. The dashboard. the interior layout--they are just a very. very nice sexy car to look at.
