1973 Volkswagen Campervan VW Type 2 Late Bay Window Full Pop-Top

Overview - 1973 Type 2 Camper (Bay Window)I have listed the description in sections to make it easy to get a good idea of the camper's condition and have been as honest as possible. I am happy for anyone to come and view the camper.  Myself and the van live in Saffron Walden. North Essex (actually not that far South of Cambridge) near the M11.
The camper was built in 1973 - I have the birth certificate from the Stiftung Museum to verify this. It was then imported to its first owner in the UK in Sept 1974 and a LHD UK Registered vehicle.  
The EngineThe camper is fitted with the more powerful 1. 7L Type 4 engine that was available to the late bay window campers and the engine bay benefits from an overhead hatch. which makes engine access a simple. I believe it is the original engine. it starts on the button every time and runs very well (runs on unleaded). It runs with a progressive Weber carburettor and electronic ignition. so pulls well with a full load and sits happily on the motorway at 60mph. with quite a bit more power from there if you need or want it. Recently. the push rod tubes and seals were replaced and the alternator was overhauled. There is a new battery which has a three year warranty with it. The exhaust and heat exchangers are all in excellent condition and reasonably new. A job to do is look at the fuel gauge as it has stopped working (a fairly common fault) and just needs a new sender unit. Mechanically it has been well looked after and is very reliable. having passed its MOT on 12 May 2016). nbsp;
ExteriorThe paintwork has been resprayed at some point in Volkswagen LA5R Blue. This predates the previous owner. so I estimate it was maybe 6 years ago as the colour is very clean and shiny (it looks really lovely in the sun as it as a metallic sheen) and is a real head-turner. This is a 43 year old vehicle at the end of the day so it is not 'Concours d'Elegance'. it has a few imperfections here and there. A few small rust bubbles under the drivers door but you'd have to look to find them. Overall this is a smart looking van that you will be as proud of owning as I have have been.  
Wheels & BrakesThe wheels are stock with stainless dome hub caps and beauty-rings. The tyres are in excellent nearly new condition with deep tread that will last many thousands of miles. The brakes benefit from being servo assisted. therefore it stops very well. A new servo was fitted in recent years and for the MOT it has new calipers and rear wheel cylinders. so you can be confident that the brakes are good.
InteriorThere is a full width 'rock and roll' bed in the back trimmed in blue and white leather with is in A1 condition and very comfortable. I can confirm that the bed is one of the best aspects of this van. Having a full width bed is definitely a good choice. it is so comfortable. just like having a normal sized double bed in the back. There are two lap belts in the back and also a 3 point inertia that a previous owner had installed for his daughter. There is a storage cupboard that would lend itself to the installation of a cooker or sink but we prefer to cook on a table outside with our gas stove or in the awning to keep the smells out of the sleeping area. I also have a 3 drawer matching unit. which will fit behind the front passenger seat for storage if needed. The pop top is in good condition with a sky light hatch and offers some extra camping. There are 2 pull out bunk beds. extremely handy for storage whilst camping or for small children to sleep. The front cab has very comfortable electronically adjustable cream leather Saab seats which are in excellent condition and a welcome upgrade on a longer journey. A new MadMatz oatmeal carpet has been fitted within the cab and through area. There is also an upgraded wooden steering wheel and a powerful chrome fan that is very welcome on those hot days.   There is a stereo but it needs to be wired in I have just not got round to doing this. I have recently had both 240v hook-up electrics and 9V leisure battery electrics fitted. This gives domestic power within the van at all times with two household type plug sockets and an additional extra 'cigarette lighter' socket within the main van (all within one discrete neat unit) so you can charge your phone/iPad or boil a kettle etc. This work was carried out professionally by Thetford Caravan Services in June this year for which I can again provide you with all the paperwork.  Finally. there is a new rear jail bar kit and brand new blue gingham curtains all round giving you full privacy within coupled with a nice look.
Extras & PaperworkThe camper includes an Outlaw awning which attaches to the van worth £240 which would comfortably sleep 4 adults or children. Also a box of various service spares and odds and ends. I even have 2 spare louvre windows you can take away. Also there is a Just Kampers full rain proof cover. There are 2 full sets of keys (same key for all doors and ignition). There is a pile of old receipts and paperwork. some old MOT's etc. There is the original order book. a couple of service manuals and as previously mentioned. the original birth certificate from the Stiftung Museum. Recent MOT. so not due till May 2017. Tax exempt and qualifies for cheap insurance. All ready to go camping and make your own adventures.
The previous owner had a agreed valuation of £15k and I have seen many vans nowhere near as good a condition as this one and spent a long time searching this one out. Therefore I have set the bidding at what I feel is a fair but good price.
