The mention of a mid mounted Ford V8 and super car looks usually leads one to believe that a Ford GT40 is perhaps up for discussion. However. there is but only one. or two. other options. and certainly at a discount. The DeTomaso Pantera. produced from 1971-1991 as a replacement for the Mangusta ended up as a huge hit. It offered superb power by way of a 351 V8. styling by Ghia. and all round supercar performance of the time. Utilizing a steel monocoque as opposed to the Mangusta's Body/Chassis set up it was indeed an interesting piece of design at the time of inception. Nearly 7. 60 examples would be produced during their production. but only 5. 00 or so would end up in the States. Thus the last few imported can perhaps be considered special. Not only because they are the last of the last due to US Safety and Emissions regulations. but because in 1974 and 1975 the only example offered was the GTS Variant. of which only 98 would make it to the US.

Packed with more power. riveted fender arches. unique 3-spoke Ferrero Steering wheel. and plenty of badging and other minute changes;  it all added up to a very interesting and extremely rare example of the Pantera as we know it. Chassis # THGTPL07091 is a true 74 Factory Built US-Spec GTS finished in its original colors and still retaining its numbers matching drive train. One of only 98 cars produced before Ford pulled out of its DeTomaso relationship in 1975; all rendering this highly original example as very collectible and very rare.

Early history on 7091 shows that it was sold new out of a West Coast Dealer in late of 1974. It was only a year later that it was resold to the service manager of a new car dealership in Northern New Jersey who enjoyed it as his “fair weather” car for a few years. In 1991 it was offered again for sale to its 3rd and most recent owner. located in Long Valley. NJ. Howard Ehmann. a well known Peirce Arrow Collector and antique fire arms collectors. The Pantera was enjoyed until it reached just over 28. 00 miles. At which time the owner unfortunately passed and the car was left to a climate controlled and properly stored environment.   There it was left for only a few years before its recent discovery in 2013. Upon its acquisition it was sent to Specialists Palma's Automotive Repair of Audobahn NJ for a thorough mechanical reconditioning.   The work completed there was a total service of all of the cars systems. putting it totally in order at this time. with nothing overlooked. As such this service is well documented. and was completed to the tune of just over $7. 00.

Today the car represents an extremely original example that has been serviced to turn key standards. Its cosmetic condition is very presentable with signs of patina but needs nothing to be enjoyed. The paint is shiny and consistent throughout. The bright work is non-existent as a unique feature of the GTS was “blacked out” bright work.  The rubber bumpers however are in good condition. The gaps are excellent. and panel fitment is very nice. especially since this example has never been apart or hit. The glass and rubber components are the originals and still in excellent condition. The lower front valence. unique to a GTS is in excellent condition as well. Overall from the exterior. this is a very straight original metal example that has never been hit or rusty and as such has only evidence of one light respray. and done very well.

Upon entering the black interior. it is obvious that the interior has never seen any sort of replacement and indeed reflects the 28K miles from new. The carpets are excellent with slight where near the drivers heel would be. The seats are excellent as is the dash. center console. and headliner. The dash mounted clock. unique to a GTS. is still present as well. The only item to note as a blemish is that of one of the heater controls which appears to have been snapped at one point or another. Otherwise everything on the interior is in proper working order including all of the gauges and accessories.

Upon starting this GTS we notice excellent oil pressure. when warm or cold. excellent temperature even when driven with spirit. and no issues in its idling or under full power. It handles very well. stops as it should and has abundant power as well as riding on good tires. Overall a very nice place to be when in the driver's seat and not in need of any attention at all.

This is a rare occasion. a true 74 US-Spec GTS on offer out of long term second ownership with low original miles. and totally sorted to turn key performance. This is indeed an opportunity to invest in a Pantera that is worthwhile and with much to offer not only in drivability but long term growth. Excellent GTS's don't come about often. thus this example warrants considerable consideration.
