Body
Though rust remains a major concern with the otherwise robust TR6. (this car is rust free) we have excellent news. Not only are most major body panels currently manufactured and available. including exterior and less-visible structural components. but entire frames can also be purchased. The only catch is that if you are insisting on that "factory" look. the new frames from RATCO. of Yaphank. New York. are apparently more robust. more durable and more dimensionally accurate than any that came out of Coventry. So. you might lose that factory authenticity. but. instead. you will be left with a better frame. Seems like a fair trade to us.

Although the stem and stern are unique to the TR6. the doors. windshield frame. floors and a few other center panels are shared with the TR4/4A and TR5/250 models. again. compelling the aftermarket to provide lots of spares. However. as TR specialist Mark Macy points out. in some cases. "Even though the fit is good on replacement parts. you still have to tweak them a little bit. " With virtually every panel and even new frames available. you could almost build a new TR6 from scratch.

Interior
Like so many other classic cars made in significant numbers that retain a loyal following. TR6s and their owners have plenty of choices when restoring. or simply refreshing the interiors of their cars. From upholstery kits and just about any individual seat component you could want or need to complete seats in vinyl or leather. the thriving aftermarket for British sport cars will be more than happy to provide you a solution for a tired TR6 interior.

And it's not just seating--you should be able to readily source just about anything else inside the car. from door handles to carpet sets to gauges to the wood-veneer dash panel. Even the frequently cracked plastic dash top is available as a reproduction part.

Of course. since we are talking about a 1970s roadster here. the many plastic components contrast with the painted metal surfaces of a decade or two before. making a TR6 interior restoration a bit more involved and not as straightforward. perhaps. as that of a TR2 or TR3.

Engine
Brawny. rorty. torquey--take your pick or simply choose "all of the above. " While its pushrods and humble origins in the Standard Eight aren't the sort of things dreams are made of. the TR6's 2. 5-liter inline-six has proved very reliable and durable.

"The engines are good and strong. says Mark. "They tend to start getting weak at anywhere from 50. 00 to 80. 00 miles. They don't have the power they had when they were new and that's to be expected from any car of that era. But. overall. they're pretty straightforward. "

The low-compression 1973 and later cars were designed to run on unleaded gas. Hardened seats can be inserted into earlier heads if valve recession becomes a problem. "We still install hardened exhaust seats in the heads whenever we rebuild an engine. but it's not a big enough factor that it would necessitate tearing down a good running engine specifically to do this. Mark says.

Given that the same basic block proved just as reliable in 150-hp fuel-injected form in Britain. the engine responds well to performance upgrades.

Gearbox
Like the engine. the four-speed transmission (with optional Laycock de Normanville overdrive) provides years of robust service. with one notable problem area to look out for.

Mark. who otherwise describes the gearbox as "bulletproof. reports that. "We do see an awful lot of layshaft bearings that are bad on them. There are two different designs and neither one of them seems to have a really extensive life. And when they come apart. they can make the transmission difficult to get apart. You'll hear some growling and some noise coming out of there to let you know that it's time to take a peek inside. "

The problem appears to be the relatively poor quality of the metal used on the layshaft. which leads to surface fatigue. As this issue seems to affect all of the TR sports cars with the four-speed. dating back to the TR3. the aftermarket has responded with a more durable alloy steel layshaft. So. when it comes time to rebuild the gearbox. a permanent solution is available.

Brakes and Suspension
From our 21st century view. the TR6 seems rather simple. but its independent rear suspension marked a rather complex solution for the day. And. just as rust looms large as an issue with every other steel or iron part of a TR6. it also can affect the TR6's suspension. Where the frame meets the rear trailing arm assemblies. moisture collects and rust becomes almost inevitable. Fortunately. partial and complete frames. including suspension components. are available. though they can be pricey.

Likewise. performance upgrades abound. including sport springs and shocks. urethane bushings and upgraded anti-roll bars for the front and similar improvements for the rear.

Described by Mark as a "pretty much trouble-free system. the factory front Girling disc brakes. at almost 11-inches diameter. provide enough stopping power for most drivers. particularly on the street. In recent years. though. some have taken to converting to a more modern Toyota setup. However. Mark points out. "Honestly. on a street car. it's probably a lot of work for no real gain. "
