IMPORTANT INTRODUCTORY NOTES:  This 1968 MERCURY COUGAR XR7 has been owned by the same Classic Car Collecting family for the past 15 years.   Many thousands of dollars have been invested to bring it to its current beautifully restored state.

THE MERCURY COUGAR STORY:  In 1967. Ford decided to give Mercury its own distinctive "upscale pony car".   It was cleverly positioned between the Mustang and Thunderbird and soon became the performance/luxury icon for Mercury.   It even inspired Mercury's "Sign of the Cat" tagline which was used for many of Mercury's most successful years.   A concerted effort was made to give the Cougar a unique "European" flair.   The XR7 option added a wood-grained dash complete with  full set of black-faced competition-type instruments. . along with toggle switches. an overhead console. T-type transmission shifter. and deluxe leather-like expanded vinyl upholstery.   In sum. the Mercury Cougar quickly became one of the most coveted new model introductions since Ford's Thunderbird and Mustang.

BACKGROUND ON THIS COUGAR XR7: An avid Mercury enthusiast and collector (who also owned a Turnpike Cruiser!) lovingly restored this 1968 Cougar.   Many thousands of dollars were invested in cosmetic and mechanical restoration.   Beautiful paint and chrome really show the timeless style of this American automotive icon.   The famed sequential tail-lights are fully operational.   The drivetrain is very strong with installation of the "Mexican" 302.   There are many articles on the internet attesting to the greater strength and durability of the Ford 302s that were specially designed for rugged use and built in Mexico.   The automatic transmission was also upgraded from the light-duty C4 to the well regarded FMX transmission - introduced in 1968.   This transmission used the stronger Ford MX-type rotating parts in the smaller FX style case.

OPERATIONAL REPORT:  The car drives very smoothly and with nice acceleration.   Very good power steering and brakes.   All headlamps/tail-lamps/turn-signals work. as do the wipers and horn.   A very nice modern AM-FM stereo radio with digital readouts (designed specifically for the vintage Cougar) has been installed. though the antenna and/or its connection may have to be investigated to improve reception a bit.   The factory AC is a very desirable feature. but the restoration stopped short of returning it to operation.

In sum. the car is ready to enjoy. but like most all classics - some work remains on "secondary systems" such as the AC. courtesy lights and likely some other minor features and options.   The hidden headlamps are fully operational. BUT the driver's side unit MAY need a little help from time to time in opening.

EXTENSIVE DOCUMENTATION:  Most Classic Cars are "mystery cars" and very little is known about what "went into" the car.   THIS car has the MOST extensive investment documentation that I have seen in a long time. it is shown in the images at right. and accompanies the car.   Mercury and Cougar enthusiast publications are also shown and included.

PAYMENT DETAILS:  Payment is due within 7 days of auction's end. Bank to Bank Wire Transfer is preferred as the safest and fastest-clearing method of payment for BOTH Buyer and Seller.   The vehicle will be released to the Buyer immediately upon - but not before - FULL bank clearance of payment.

INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS are welcome. but MUST adhere to the SAME Payment Terms detailed above and also make all arrangements for the pick-up and importation of the Vehicle into the Buyer's country.   We will store the car free of charge for a reasonable period of time while transportation and shipment of the Vehicle is arranged.
