Booked in next week to have the windscreen seals replaced and sills repaired. as well as cargo door lower clean up.
Impending house purchase means I have to sell my beloved camper. I have owned it for over two years and it hasn't missed a beat in that time. Dry stored over winter. charged battery and turned it over a couple of times and it started right up. MOT'd and serviced last month - needed a new brake light switch and that was it! Fitted a new dizzy cap. plugs. oil strainer and changed the oil for good measure.
It's a 1966 ex-Fire Engine from Oedelum. Germany (near Hanover I believe). full camping interior was fitted early 2009. Lots of original bits including the blue light for the roof (switches and signs still in the van if you wanted to try and hook it all back up. obviously can't have this on when you're on the road though). It has the rare rear facing single seat and I also have the barrels. pistons. dizzy cap and other engine parts it left the factory with 47 years ago as well as the original manuals (all in German!). The van is fitted with an original VW of America roof rack and has chrome/aluminium door stays for cargo doors and sign writing on the front doors (have the logo and dimensions for the original logo that would have been on the cargo doors too). There's also a roof ladder and the original RED VW nose badge. I've just found a couple of trophies - 2007 Best in Class Volkfest Wales and 2010 2nd Place Commercial Dubs at The Castle.
The guy I bought the van from looked after it exceptionally well and brought it up to the excellent condition it's currently in. keeping a note of everything he'd ever done to it - I've tried to keep this up. Engine (and lots of other running gear) was rebuilt in May 2007 at 62. 00km (38. 00 miles) and it's just hit 90. 00km (56. 00 miles). It has been serviced at least every 3000 miles or 6 months since. It was a 1500cc but now bored out to 1600 - sits nicely at 60-70 on the motorway and pulls away quicker than you'd expect. Brakes (drums) were also replaced in 2007 and have been regularly checked. cleaned etc.
Since I've had the van. I've done around 3000 truly enjoyable miles and the following work:
Passenger side rear inner and outer sill replaced and repainted by The Old Dub Shop. Original wing mirrors painted and fitted. 2 x rear lap belts and front lap belt fitted (now has 2 inertia reel and 3 lap belts. sits 3 up top and two in the back - plus a single rear facing seat with no belt). New batteryFront bench seat fixed and re-trimmed in leather (to match the rear) by KRYCH Trimming. Driver side inner and outer sill & battery tray rear corner replaced. Partial respray including rear bumper. Alternator re-conditioned.
Other things that I know have been done:
Lowered with beam adjusters & KYB springsElectronic ignitionReduction boxesFlamethrower coil009 DistributorBillet aluminium handles12V electricsSound system with head unit. front & rear speakers. sub etc
As you can see from the photos. it has a full camping interior with leisure battery. lighting. rock and roll bed. sink (not plumbed in). cooker. mini-fridge. cupboards. table. chrome fire extinguisher. Van-X curtains. aluminium checker plate floors and walls. I also have a camping awning (sleeps 2-4). van cover. screen shade and two spare wheels (fronts are on smart car tyres). my 70s Pepsi cool box is negotiable.
The van is in great nick and ready to go for the summer season - part of me doesn't want it to go so I can enjoy it!
As you can appreciate. it's 47 years old so it isn't without blemishes. main ones to note:
Front windows could do with new seals - has taken in some water in the past so slightly untidy with rust in a couple of areas around the frame inside. Cargo doors (mainly left side) could do with a clean up at the bottom. Plug sockets not wired in (we use a camping hook up). Driver side (LHD) wing mirror is plastic not glass as The Old Dub Shop dinged it. works fine but could be done.
I've considered a respray but it looks so nice as it is - it gets so much attention! It's not going to win best paint at a show but I've got a new 5L tin of Ankor Wax. I'd keep the patina and just wax it up again. The sills and rear corner had to be replaced so I've had to blend in or paint in the original fire engine red where this has been done.
The van is in Stoke Gifford. Bristol (right by Parkway Railway Station) and you're more than welcome to come and view and drive. The Old Dub Shop have said it's one of the straightest and tidiest vans they've driven. I'll be devastated to see it go (as will my 2 year old boy) - it needs to go to a loving home where it'll be enjoyed and appreciated.
