1985 M1009 Chevrolet K5 Blazer
This truck has A/C and a Turbo
I am selling my 1985 M1009. This is an awesome vehicle. and it is nearly complete. but I do not have the time to finish the project. Please read this description thoroughly so you know exactly what you are bidding on.
This vehicle started out as a radio truck for the Marine Corps. It is 31 years old. and has spent most of it's life as a hard-use vehicle. I hive spent many hours working on this vehicle. and I will do my best to describe it honestly.
It is a great vehicle. Right now it will start instantly with a turn of the key. The engine sounds great. and runs very strong. The transmission shifts smoothly through all of the gears. but does have a slight whine (probably the transmission fluid pump making the extra noise). The transfer case shifts into all ranges. 4H. 4L. and 2H all work as they should. The brake pedal feels a little soft. so it could probably use a brake job. but it still stops as it should. Right now. there are only a few things that must be done before the vehicle can be put back on the road.
Things that need to be done:
* Brake job* Turn signal lights need to be fixed* Speedometer doesn't work (probably the plastic gear. $10 fix)* Dash panel needs new light bulbs* Windshield has a large crack (in photos). but may still pass inspection** All fluids should probably be changed before the truck goes back into daily service.
That being said. I would not suggest trying to drive this vehicle home from Texas to California. You might be able to make it a few hours to drive home. but make sure it is daylight. and bring your tools just in case.
The good stuff
* Engine is a 6. 2 diesel. and has been turbocharged with a turbo from a 6. 5 GM diesel. The engine starts easily. and runs great. If you have never driven one of these with the 6. 2. I can tell you a little about them. They are strong. fuel efficient. but slow. Because of the turbo. this one is stronger. more fuel efficient. and pretty quick for a 30 year old diesel.
* A/C. A/C. A/C- these military Blazers are awesome. but they were not built for comfort. None of the M1009s came with air conditioning. There are a couple of companies that sell retrofit kits to add A/C to these great vehicles. but the kits cost a couple thousand dollars by the time you purchase all the necessary parts and supplies. and labor can easily cost a couple thousand more to have the kit installed. If you are really handy. you can install your own. but it will take 20-40 hours or more to get the job done. This truck has A/C installed and working.   The A/C in this truck was removed piece by piece from a civilian 1990 Blazer. and installed in this truck. Last week the compressor went out. so I replaced the compressor and recharged the system. It works well. and blows cold. The only problem with the A/C system is that the blower blows mostly through the floor vents. and only a little through the upper vents. Did I mention that this truck has a working A/C?
* Soft-topper brand Soft top. This vehicle is equipped with a brand new soft top. This top can be configured completely closed. sides rolled up. or the whole thing can be rolled up and laid back like a convertible. The top was custom ordered with no side windows and a dark tinted back window to keep prying eyes out. These tops are easy to use and give this truck a very cool look that gets a lot of compliments.
* New Paint. The truck was recently painted inside and out with a WWII olive drab green with a satin finish. No real body work was done. There was a little light surface rust that was sanded and treated. then the truck was painted over the existing CARC paint. This preserves some of the rust protective coating that the military put on the truck. but it also means that dents and imperfections in the body work and paint are still visible in the new paint. The truck looks pretty good. but the paint is far. far from show quality. Keep in mind. 31 year old military vehicle that has been dressed up a little.
* New Locks. The military put the same key locks for the doors and ignition in all of these M1009s. I changed the door locks and ignition lock to new keys.
* New Door Panels. The door panels were replaced with new after-market black plastic door panels.
* New door rubber and window seals in both front doors.
* New window regulator gears and handles.
* Dash pad was dressed up with a Coverlay brand dash cover. This cover is a custom molded plastic cover made to fit on top of the original cracked dash pad. The cover is black plastic and matches the door panels. It looks very good. but not perfect. A whole lot better than the old cracked up one though.
* Brand new 32x10. 50x15 Kenda Mud Terrain Tires. These have less than 10 miles on them.
* Brand new American Wheels brand black steel wheels with matching black lug nuts.
*Brand new tail light lenses.

I have lots of extra parts that I can include  if you want them. I have an extra set of V belts for the engine accessories. I have the original hard top. and back glass window. but they are in rough condition (if you want these you will need to have a way to haul them). I have the original back seat. it is in rough shape and is not installed. but you can have it if you want it. I have a set of the rear radio racks.
The front seats are the original front seats with seat covers on them. They aren't the best ever. but they still work.
Go ahead and do a little research on these. They are a 3/4 ton truck. they have no computers to be affected by water or EMPs. Everything is mechanical. They are a lot of fun to drive. whether you are on the road. or way off the beaten path. The coolest thing about these is that pretty much every soldier. nbsp;sailor. airman and marine who was in service between 1980 and 2005 has driven around in one of these at one time or another; and it is a lot of fun to talk to those guys and girls when they get nostalgic about the old truck.
I have seen a lot of these sell on Ebay. Some go for $3000. some go for $15. 00. The $3000 truck will be $10. 00 or $12. 00 by the time you get it into the condition this one is in. Most of the $10. 00 to $15. 00 M1009s you will see on Ebay will not have A/C and Turbo. In fact. I have been working on these vehicles for the past 15 years. and I have never run across another one with A/C and turbo. There is a little more work to do on this one. but for well under $10. 00 final cost you can have one of the most usable M1009s anywhere in the USA.
Thanks for looking.

***Information Added in response to questions:The truck has a CLEAR TEXAS TITLE and can easily be transferred to anyone in the US. It cannot be exported. Local pick up only. I can possibly arrange to pick you up from the airport with prior notice.
The hard top is available to go with the vehicle and is FREE if you want it with the truck. It is made of fiberglass. and it is solid with all windows still intact. However. the fiberglass is in rough shape. The glass mat is showing through the gelcoat on the top of the shell. so it will need to be painted. and the rubber seals would need to be replaced.
The tailgate is in good shape. but the rear glass and regulator gear have been removed. The regulator was not working. so I took the glass and regulator out intending to replace them. but decided not to replace the regulator gear since the soft top came with a rear window. The glass is still in good shape and is available FREE if you want it with the truck; however. you would need a new regulator to install it in the tailgate.
The underside of the truck does not have any rust on the body or frame. at least none that I have seen and I have crawled around under there quite a bit. The only rust is on a few mounting bolts. the exhaust pipe. and the exhaust hangers. There are a few small oil leaks under the truck. and the oil has built up into grease spots in a couple areas. So. the underside is not perfectly clean. but it is solid and rust-free.
Thanks for all the good questions. Happy bidding.
