1963 Austin Healey 3000 (BJ7)

This rare big Healey has an unusual past.   I've owned this beautiful driver for ten years after purchasing it from an auction house disposing of the inventory from a classic auto museum in Florida where it had been on display in a window so long that UV had faded the original paint to orange and destroyed all the rubber parts.   But with less than 49K original miles and no major rust (uncommon for these older Brits) it was an ideal candidate for cosmetic refurbishment.   I'm confident of the mileage since it still had the original '63 Michelin X tires and the engine compression was within factory tolerance.   Another indication of its overall condition was the way it started and ran immediately with every gage working.   Even the electric overdrive engaged smoothly the first time I drove it.  

I disassembled the body down to the inner frame (the 3000 Healey doesn't have a separate ladder frame).   Mostly. it was cleaned and repainted.   The underbody was left alone and is still original.   The outriggers and spring shackles are all good.   The only minor rust in the car was located in two small holes in the floorboards under the carpet. which were otherwise sound.   The affected metal was cut away and the floorboards sealed with Por15.   There are two small patches riveted over the holes.   Other than that. there was no body work done to the car other than to strip and paint.   The engine ran perfectly. with compression measurements of 160-170 psi across all six cylinders.   It was cleaned and painted and received new motor mounts and freeze plugs. but was otherwise untouched.   The carburetors were disassembled. cleaned and new rebuild kits from Moss were installed.   They had been working fine. but the carbs needed to be disassembled for cleaning. so the kits were mainly a precaution.   From experience. new synchros were installed in the transmission. however the old ones showed very little wear.   The distributor parts were all replaced from Moss.  

The body was reassembled after painting with acrylic polyurethane over epoxy primer/sealer in its original colors.   All fiber. rubber or otherwise disintegrated components were replaced with new.  There was no evidence of major body damage and the car sits squarely at all four corners.   The interior upholstery was untouched and appears like it was redone correctly sometime before I purchased it.   I replaced the top. chrome bumpers. door handles and trunk hinges.   The emergency brake handle was rechromed.   The windshield is original and in good shape.  

Finally. the original tires were checkered badly from age. but I kept them on the car for several years before replacing them.   The new vintage tires are correctly sized Goodrich bias plys from original molds sold by Coker.   After spending a couple years refurbishing it. I set the timing and carbs per the original shop manual and the car started on the first crank.   It's been running flawlessly ever since.   Since the completion in 2005. the car has relocated with my job form Orlando to Chicago and now to New Hampshire.   It's been driven in good weather for a total of less than 2000 miles. but needs a new home as I start a new project.   This sexy beauty attracts constant attention when we cruise the seacoast in good weather.   All my work has been documented since the refurbishment and the car has been garaged continuously.   For more information. call Frank at 847-687-2066. or send me an email at eosecurityguy@gmail. com.
