Porsche 924 s The 924 marked a radical departure from traditional Porsches. It was a vital and inspired model for Porsche. It kept Porsche alive when the 911 wasn't profitable enough to do so. it provided a basis for the well respected 944 and 968. it gave those who didn't want a Porsche 911 the opportunity to own a Porsche. and for those who only cared for the 911. it provided the funds to develop the next generation of that model. 40 years after its introduction. and with Porsche now making more SUVs than Sports cars. the 924 is being recognised as an essential. fundamental model in Porsche history. The 924 has always had a loyal following. but it's been a quiet. contented following. Now. with the oldest 924s being an unbelievable 40 years. it's becoming clear just what an outstandingly complete and competent car the 924 is. The 924s Was produced for just 3 years (1985-1988) and comes fitted with the all Porsche 2. 5 ltr engine as used in its bigger and heavier brother. the 944. unlike the VW/Audi unit used in its predecessor. C983 TBY The 3rd December 1985 was a big day for Mr Tasker esq of Grey House Beckley in Oxfordshire as he was to take delivery of his new car. The stunning Porsche 924s in Guards red with black interior with the following options. 398 Driver side mirror flat. electrically adjustable and heatable 423 Holder for cassettes and coins 425 Rear window wiper 650 Detachable roof. electrical 651 Electric windows 657 Power assisted steering Despite its limited use. he ensured his pride and joy was serviced every single year (for 23 years!) until he sadly passed away in 2008. Ownership of the car was then passed over to Mr Brian Hickman. then with just 55000 miles . following an ad placed by his nephew in the 924 owners club forum. Brian. an active member of the 924 owners club. used the car sparingly and during his ownership it was borrowed by the Porsche owners club GB to display on their stand in the Autosport international show 2009 (certificate and thank you letter with the history file). In February of that year. ownership passed to another 924 owners club member. Christopher Winlow. then with just 56000 miles covered. Mr Winlow immediately made the sensible decision to have the cam belt. balance belt and tensioners all replaced at a cost of over £700 (receipt with file and stamped in service book) He also had the wheels refurbished at a cost of £234. Ownership then went to Mr Alan Benison in 2010 having covered just 58000 miles in total. The file shows that he took the car to Porsche Centre Sheffield (official Porsche Centre) where they carried out a visual inspection followed by to remedial work and service. at a total cost of £1209. This includes the fitment of a petrol tank. supplied by Mr Benison. that he purchased for £558. When you consider the fitting of the tank was £470 of the £1209 bill from Porsche. this shows what great condition the car was in. even though the car was 25 years old at this time! A couple of months after this work. Mr Benison again took the car to Porsche centre Sheffield to report on a whine noise from the gearbox. The box was stripped down and gears/Shims replaced as required and then rebuilt. This cost a further £1050. He then enjoyed driving the car. covering 3500 miles before again returning it to Porsche centre Sheffield for engine mount replacement (£424). then with 62470 miles. In December that year. the car was again returned to the official Porsche centre for a 60. 00 mile service (showing 63156 Miles) at a cost of £659. In March 2011 Mr Benison then sold the car to Brian Pearce At 65069 miles (10/2011) new power steering pipes and coupling shafts were fitted (£511) At 65522 miles (04/2012) a brake light switch and MOT carried out (£103) At 65835 miles (08/2013) annual service and replacement leads/rotor arm and distributer cap fitted (£482) and at 65837 miles (09/2013) new cam belt and balance shaft belt kit supplied and fitted (£803. 95). 4 new tyres were also fitted in July 2013 with 65830 miles (£237) In august 2015. I came into the story. Mr Pearce kept the car under a large tarpaulin on his drive. and since his ownership I walked/cycled /drove past it on an almost daily basis. It caught my attention as I am a Porsche enthusiast and my boss of 25 years previous had the same model. in the same colour combination (Guards Red) and I have wanted one ever since. On that day in August. I knocked on Brians door and made enquiries about the condition and his plans for the car. He said he may be interested in selling it and following a few minutes of looking over the car. noting the mint interior. low mileage and un-cracked dashboard. a deal was struck. I returned a few days later. the car fired up immediately (following a battery charge) and I drove it the few miles home. I have a picture of the car after my collection (it was covered in cobwebs) and other pictures following a good wash that show the car transformed. To the casual eye. the car looked amazing but on very close inspection there were signs that the car was beginning to show signs of its age (30 years!) It was up to me to resolve it. First the brakes were rebuilt with new seal kits and the fluid replaced. Then to the body work. Whilst the car was in amazing condition. close inspection revealed that there was some blistering on the outer sills and very slight blisters around one side indicator. I drove the car to a well known classic car dealer/restorer (RS Cars of Greenfield) to discuss the options. It was decided that the car would need stripping down. any rust to be completely cut out and replaced with good metal. and. to avoid any possibility of colour miss-match. both sides plus the front and rear bumper to be painted. Full photographic documentation comes supplied with the car showing the work as it was carried out. Following its return to me. I replaced the front suspension and springs. re-applied the ‘S' graphics. replaced the wipers. fitted new genuine Porsche side moulding. gave it another wash. had a four wheel alignment carried out and presented it for an MOT. Which it passed. With no advisories. with 65980 miles. After the Mot. I decided on a few cosmetic remedies under the car. I have replaced both wishbones. including the bushes ( the bushes were fine. but it made sense to replace them. and the wishbones only had surface rust on them). I also replaced the anti-roll bar bushes (for genuine Porsche items) whilst I was at it. The rear section of the exhaust was not blowing (remember. no advisories) but its condition (surface rust) let the back view of the car down. so this was replaced. It was then a question of how best to preserve this amazing Porsche for years to come. After much research. I decided on having the underside protected with Dinatrol. For those of you that are aware of the product. then it needs no explanation. For those that aren't. a quick internet search will convince you of its superiority over its competitors (waxoil etc). The company I chose to complete the work will only do one car per day due to the time taken to prepare and apply. It come with a 5 year warranty (supplied with the car) and. of course. I have pictures prior to the treatment to show how good things were under the car before the treatment and that it was only applied to preserve and tidy up the underside. The job was not cheap (close to £500) but well worth it for the protection it gives. The space saver spare wheel appears unused as does the full tool kit. Even the roof cover is present as is. of course. a stack of history including a fully stamped up service book with the vehicle documents in their original wallet. Two keys are present. Original radio/cassette. In the last 900 miles. around £7000 has been spent on this beautiful car (over £10. 00 in the last 10. 00 miles) and as you can see from the condition. its been money well spent. With the low mileage and stunning history & amazing condition. I believe this is possibly the best 924s in the country. possibly in the world! I would urge the new owner to join the 924 owners club (www. 924. co. uk ). They are. frankly. brilliant. Quick to respond to a query (technical or otherwise) and a valuable source of information with a brilliant club magazine as well. Offered now for sale. for the first time since new on the open market. This is your opportunity to acquire. what I believe. is the best 924s there is. Inspections by arrangement at my home address (Harrold. Beds. where the car is registered) or. possibly. my place of work (Bedford). I have many pictures of the car. but can only email 3 at a time so if you would like more pics. you can email me james@hattersfurniture. co. uk and I'll reply with pics attached. Let me know if there are specific areas you would like the pictures of. I am in no rush to sell. after all. we all know how the classic car market is performing. and it's a far better investment than money in the bank. but it would be nice to release some space in my garage. Any questions. inspections etc? email or call/Text 07905 303224 (James). Leave a message if I can't answer and I will call you back. I may be open to a part ex. Bike or car.
