Snippets: Which Lady Howard de Walden? In 1958 GLW11 was delivered to Lady Howard de Walden at Wonham Manor. at that time there were 2 Lady de Walden both of whom have led interesting lives. Lady Margherita (1890/1974) widow of Thomas. 8th Lord H. de Walden (1880/1946) and Lady Irene (1910/75) wife of John. 9th Lord H. de Walden. Lady Margherita's parents were Charles & Florence van Raalte (a wealthy banker & amateur artist). by all accounts Margherita inherited both their wealth and talent. she trained as an opera singer and even performed in La Demoisell Elue with Sir Thomas Beecham as conductor. At the van Raalte's family home - Aldenham Abbey – they were often joined by the Infanta Eulalia and her two sons Prince Alfonso & Prince Luis de Orleans Borbon during the school holidays –Alfonso later married Prince Beatrice Saxe-Coburg-Gotha & Luis married Marie. widow of Prince Henri de Broglie (he was 41 & she was 72!). In 1912 Margherita married Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis and in November that year Margherita gave birth to twins – Bronwen & John Osmael. A little known fact is that in 1931 whilst John was on holiday in Germany he purchased his first car & on his first drive of the car knocked down a pedestrian – none-other than Adolf Hitler! The world would have been a much better place and millions of lives saved if Hitler had been killed. After their marriage Tommy was stationed in Egypt where Margherita joined him. leaving the children at Chirk Castle which Lord Tommy leased (1910/1945). - Of their children - Priscilla ‘Pip' learnt to fly a Gypsy month when she was just 15. served with Franco's Nationalist Forces in Spain (Doves of War by Preston) & later married an opera singer; Elizabeth wed Count Serge Orloff-Davidoff (grandson of Anatole Orloff-Davidoff. Russian magnate & Master of the Horse to Tsar Nicholas II). Count Serge died in 1945 after a car crash; Rosemary married the self-obsessed George Seymour of Thrumpton Hall (which he inherited from his uncle the 10th Lord Byron). Prior to marriage Lady Irene was better known as Princess Irene Harrach. daughter of Count Hans-Albrecht Harrach (sculptor) & Princess Helene Arco-Zinneberg. The first mention of the Harrach name is in 1195 when they are mentioned at the Ranshofen monastery. Austria. Lady Irene died in 1975 (the year after her mother-in-law) and 3 years later John Osmael married Gillian (ex wife of Lord Mountgarret)
