Snippets: The Hs of Handley-Page
Ordered by & delivered to Frederick Handley-Page (Kt 1942) who was a pioneer within the aircraft industry. Frederick was just 24 years old when he formed his company. which in due course became the first British Public Company to build aircraft. He had a fondness for the letter H which was show in the names of the aircraft models: Hadrian. Halifax. Hannibal. Hanno. Hastings Helena. Hengist (originally named Hesperides). Heracles/Hercules. Herald. Hermes. Horatius. Horsa – his earlier aircraft the Type A was given the name “Bluebird” and the Type D which after various repairs was nicknamed Antiseptic by Edward Petre. the test pilot. due to the colour of the yellow varnish! Frederick was not the only member of the family to be involved in the world of aircraft. his nephew Alan Geoffrey Page was a WWII flying ace who sustained major burns injury when his Hurricane was shot down in flames. He was fortunate that he was sent to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead where the pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald MacIndoe was posted. Due to Page's determination & Sir MacIndoe's work after 15 operation Geoffrey succeeded in being reinstated as a pilot & he vowed that he would shoot down at least 1 enemy aircraft for each operation that he had undergone – this he did before he crashed again in 1944 and once again met up with Sir MacIndoe.
