The original Elan was introduced in 1962 as a roadster. although
an optional hardtop was offered in 1963 and a coupé version in
1965. The two-seat Lotus Elan replaced the elegant. but unreliable
and expensive to produce. Lotus Elite. It was the first Lotus road
car to use the. now famous. steel backbone sub-frame with a
fibreglass body. The Elan embodied the Colin Chapman minimum weight
design philosophy. It was technologically advanced with a
Lotus-Ford twin-cam. 1558cc engine. four-wheel disc brakes and
four-wheel independent suspension. The Elan +2 was introduced in
1967 with a longer wheelbase and two more rear seats. It was a fast
and agile sporting coupé with very elegant lines. It combined the
performance and reliability of the Elan Coupé with genuine 2+2
passenger comfort. With less than 1200 of these cars on the roads
today. their relative rarity. beautiful lines. impressive
performance and practicality are the main factors for the rising
interest in these cars among collectors.

This particular example was purchased by the vendor from the
original owner almost 30 years ago. The vendor informs us that in
1989. he had the chassis replaced with a galvanised one; he also
had the body replaced at the same time. In more recent times the
vendor undertook an extensive two year restoration on the car. The
car had a complete respray. the interior was entirely replaced. the
engine was rebuilt by Pat Thomas of Kelvedon Lotus with a new head
and many upgraded internals and now boasts electronic ignition.
Once these upgrades were complete and combined with a full
stainless steel exhaust. the car was dyno tested and produced an
impressive 137bhp. Among numerous other parts the car also received
a gearbox overhaul. new wiring loom and adjustable shock absorbers.
The bill for this restoration is estimated by the vendor to be over
£20. 00 and the pile of invoices in the history folder casts little
doubt over this. The vehicle is supplied with a V5C registration
document and a recent MoT test certificate. The time and attention
given to restoring this car is immediately clear; it surely must be
one of the best examples in the country requiring only one thing… a
new owner.
