The Mercedes 280SL ‘Pagoda' was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through until February 1971. The W113 was then replaced by its successor. the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350SL. Over the years. the W113 evolved from a ‘sports car' into a comfortable ‘grand tourer'. and was usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. The obvious difference from its predecessor was the upgrade to the 2778cc M130 engine. which purists will tell you finally gave the Pagoda adequate power. Now suitably refined. the car proved popular in the US market. however. we've seen a significant increase in demand here in the UK - not least due to its predecessor. the 50's 190SL. rising beyond the budgets of many.

This example is a beautifully renovated 1969 Pagoda 280 SL automatic. The restoration was undertaken by Byprof in Denmark and the work was carried out to a very high standard. The following parts were replaced during the renovation: complete new exhaust. oil and filters in the engine and gearbox. headlights. tail. brake lines. fuel lines. brake callipers renovated and rear brake pads and rear hand brake cables. springs. front wheel bearings. rear fenders. carpets. seat covers (MB tex). new soft top. battery. speedometer serviced and converted to km. the clock renovated. and all new rubber seals and bearings in the generator.

Over 1. 00 man-hours have been spent on these recent improvements and it shows extremely well.

These attributes help explain the 280SL's phenomenal success. particularly in the all-important North American market where the optional automatic transmission was considered an essential feature by the majority of customers. The fact that it looked like 'sex on wheels' helped enormously too. of course. The 280SL's essential user friendliness broadened its appeal beyond the traditional sports car-enthusiast market. and many celebrities and film stars owned 280SLs.

The last of a popular and extremely successful line begun with the 230SL of 1963. the Mercedes-Benz 280SL was introduced in 1967 powered by a new 2. 8-litre six-cylinder engine that produced 180bhp. 20 horsepower more than the preceding 250SL's. The 280SL's 120mph top speed was no greater but it was significantly quicker off the mark. its 0-60mph time of 10 seconds being a whole second better than its predecessor's. Christened 'pagoda top' after their distinctive cabin shape. these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and remain highly sought after by collectors.
