I purchased the car in Seattle in 1992 from a recently graduated med student who was leaving for Europe. I don't know prior history. I drove it in Seattle for about 5 years. then garaged it in Bellingham for 5 years. Then I had it transported to Portland in 2002. Since it has been in Portland. I have driven it about one thousand miles.   And that is why it is for sale.   This car deserves to be driven.

I have an original 50 page. generic 'Instruction Book'. Chilton's Repair and Tune-Up Guide for 1956-69 Volvos and a 'Volvo 1800 1960-71 Autobook' by Kenneth Ball published in England by Autopress.   Custom car cover. sheepskin seat covers and Oregon plates good till 2015 are included.

The car has been outside for the last 10 years in Portland. Oregon. where it rains a bit. always covered with an Evolution custom cover and a tarp over that. loose enough to allow air circulation. but keeping the cover dry.   There is no significant rust.   See below.

INTERIOR

Gauges - Odometer - approximately 41090 and working. I would add a '1' to that.   Trip odometer works.   There is some rust on the gauge surrounds. The glass on the tach is cracked.   Speedometer and tachometer work. but are not accurate. Speedometer is bouncy. but close.   Water temp gauge works. Fuel and oil pressure gauges are not accurate. Clock and oil temp gauge do not work.

Dash doesn't have any cracks but does not  lie smoothly.

Heater fan works. 2 speeds. Control levers for heat/and temp do not work. Lever for defrost does. They can be controlled under the dash. just not while you're driving. The pulls for the air vents probably need some grease.

High beam floor button doesn't work. so no high beams. High beam indicator light is always on.

Electrical Issues –

When the lighting knob is pulled out 1 stop. the front parking lights (amber) and rear running lights are on. The second stop is for the headlights which do work. but then the running lights do not. Dash lights should be on for either.

The brake lights and all signals work dependably. The single map light works. I have not seen the license plate light or the interior lights over back seat light up. Ditto for the back up lights.

The Undependables – Dash lights and rear running lights. They have worked but today they don't.

Seatbelts are rather stiff. but do click in tightly. Never really tested.

The passenger side vent window is missing its handle.

After a minor downpour in April. while it was not covered. there was a quarter sized wet spot on carpet on the drivers side. which corresponds to the vent window which does not close tightly. No water in the trunk or the gas filler well.

The carpet is new. Not the smoothest installation. but new.

The vent windows can rattle. the speedometer makes some noise. I have never smelled exhaust while driving.

The leather front seats are in excellent condition because they have been covered with sheepskin forever. There is one small area of wear on the side of the driver's seat. No rips. The drivers side sheepskin is loose and worn a bit. They look purple in photos but are black.

The interior is very good. headliner is perfect. Left side panel under the dash has come away from the side.

Speakers were installed behind the back seat which is in very good condition. The radio is brand new. an Alpine CDE141.

The horn works. A starter button was installed  to save wear on the key. But occasionally that does not work. File that under electrical. I guess.

EXTERIOR

Down-to-metal paint job in 2006. It is white with a little pearl that pops in the sun. The chrome is very good. There is pitting only on the over license plate part. (photo)

Included in restoration work:

Front Grill replaced. Plywood base for battery installed. Bondo was found on the rear only and was removed. as far as I know. New trunk mat/liner. New window and door chrome and weather stripping. New side body metal molding. New antenna. new washer jets (never tested). Bumpers were replaced.   New left and right rear reflectors.   New stone guards on rear wheel wells. New tires

There are minor chips in the paint. Largest is on the hood at the hinge end. (photo). Others are on door edges and  small ones from road use.

There are a few bubbles under the paint on the under door panels. Both sides. (photo) There is rust visible on both rocker panels. (photo). I don't know of any serious rust issues.

The trunk shuts securely (no water leak). but does not lock. There is rust visible in the trunk under the mat. The jack cannot be found. There is a spare tire with cover.

The 68's have a locking door over a well in which the gas tank filler is located. It sits on the top of the left rear fender. There is a totally inadequate drain hole in this well. There is a gasket that is supposed to fit securely over the filler hole. When the drain hole gets clogged with dirt or tiny blossom petals settle over the hole after drifting through the space between the locking door and the fender. water can fill up that well and get into the gas tank. This happened 3 times to me in Seattle and once in Portland. Carburators. fuel filters etc were cleaned or replaced each time. SU carbs replaced Webers in 2007 and gas tank work was done in 2009. See below. The tank always has alcohol/preservative in it now. I use a rubber or plastic gasket and the drain hole is cleared with a plastic cord frequently.   And it is always covered.   When not in use.

Windshield wiper motor was replaced. but I can't seem to find the receipt for that. Wipers do their job.

The passenger door does not lock. The drivers door does. but I can't get the key to unlock it.

ENGINE. ETC

The engine is a 4 cylinder B18 with 2 SU-HS6 carburators.   The engine sounds strong. It is fine at freeway speeds. The brakes work. The battery is an Exide with extra cranking ability. two years old.

Water and oil levels are stable. I change the oil once per year. It has never overheated.

There is exhaust smoke upon starting. (Over rich due to choke use?) Not noticeable once it is running.

Shifting is smooth and the clutch does not slip. Overdrive works. light goes on. I use a little clutch to disengage.

There are no holes in the floor pan or muffler.   No smell of exhaust.

When it was on the lift for its last oil change. the mechanic found a leak from the odometer cable.

WORK HISTORY (for which I have receipts (and can actually read the receipts) and excluding minor/recurring maintenance like filters. lubrication. batteries)

In Seattle

1992 Pre purchase inspection:

Compression test. Brakes adequate. Slight wear on R steering rod. Suspension OK. Oil leak and clutch leak noted. Needs U joint (If this is what it said. it has not been replaced. but has been checked since and is tight)

1992 Clutch master and slave replaced. Replaced ignition lock cylinder

1993 Idle adjustment. Replaced speedometer cable. Valves adjusted

1995 Valves adjusted. Clutch assembly replaced. Replaced worn trans. Mount

In Bellingham

1999 New generator. Replaced front brake calipers and rotors. Replaced right tie rod assembly

In Portland

2002 Replaced rear wheel cylinders for frozen parking brake

2007 Replaced Weber carbs with SU carbs. Added starter button. halogen headlamps and fixed horn. Replaced filters. hoses. cables as needed. New spark plug wires. distributor cap and rotor.

2008 Rehung muffler. Fix heater control levers. Repair wiring to rear taillight sockets.   Note these last 2 “repairs” did not work. Muffler. though. is still in place

New fuel tank sender unit gasket. Fuel tank 'boiled out. cleaned. flushed. repaired small leak and coated. '

Last 4 years. only oil changes. new radio and replacement of side exterior mirror.

Please feel free to ask questions.   More photos are available.   This car is. of course. sold AS IS.   Because it has been driven so little over the past 10 years. you may encounter things that need attention that I am not aware of.   I know of no current mechanical issues.   It has electrical and dash gauge problems as noted above and it needs its carburators adjusted.   VIN is 183451  026627.
