A few interesting facts about the MK V Bentleys. without going into technical details.

Rolls Royce planned to produce thirty five Bentley MK V chassis starting from B-2-AW through to B-70-AW using even numbers only and seventeen were actually completed into running chassis due to the outbreak of hostilities. Ten of these are recorded as being destroyed and seven genuine MK V's remain today. The Bentley MK V engine is derived from the Wraith which is regarded as the finest engine made by Rolls Royce and by modifying the camshafts. pistons and re-engineering the inlet and outlet manifolds whilst fitting twin carburettors made for a rapid sports car and the most advanced Bentley made pre war. B-34-AW is the last chassis to leave the Derby works and is a very important historical car in the companies history. With cars being manufactured from 1908 in the Derby factory up until this car. It is the very last of the truly hand made cars manufactured by Rolls Royce before the rationalised ranges were launched at the Crewe factory from 1946 onwards.

B-34-AW was originally manufactured to be shown at the 1939-40 New York World fair but due to the risks involved in shipping during that time was instead offered to Jack Barclay as a Park ward bodied sports saloon which he gave his usual thorough attention to detail instructions and registered the car as JB 1. He evaluated the car over a two year period and had to give Rolls Royce regular updates as all the MK V's were really experimental cars . After WW2 the car was sold and registered FYL 811.

This car has Wolf Barnato's engine fitted from chassis B-16-AW as there was a lot of changes due to no spare parts being available. engines and gearboxes were just swapped over and the originals repaired for the next car to come in. This probably was installed by Andrew Wood of P & A Wood when the car was acquired by him whilst he was an apprentice at Rolls Royce. The brothers had to restore the car at the works in Hythe road to the satisfaction of the foreman and installed upgrades at that time to give the car the latest improvements. The gearbox when stripped for inspection during the restoration was in perfect order and is stamped W1. The first gearbox they had done. The engine was stripped and installed the new crown pistons supplied by the Heritage trust.

The coachwork is by Park Ward and the car is a lightweight sports saloon using a steel body frame with alloy wings. boot lid . bonnet and doors. During its recent restoration the car was painted in its original Corniche Maroon colour way and was displayed at the opening ceremony of the new Rolls Royce showroom at P & A Wood's as it was the first Bentley restored by them. To the interior is pale grey hide all in superb condition with matching pale grey carpets bound in leather. The car is fully restored & driving superbly; A very rare & collectable Bentley.
