1931 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Windovers Sedanca de Ville GNS75

A rare - possibly unique - and very attractively designed car. incorporating many appealing features. such as very stylish wings. separate steps in place of running boards. slim bumpers. external visor. louvred bonnet & scuttle. polished aluminium bonnet top and waistline. P80 'bullseye' headlamps. pillar spotlamp. rear instruments etc. the list goes on. Add to this the overall gorgeous design and the incorporation of various Art Deco touches. and you have a very special car indeed. In excellent condition. and in the process of being re-commissioned after a long storage period. Finished in pastel blue and black with black leather interior. all in good order. Snippets: An Aviator & an Architect:

Initially ordered by J. J. Jones of 88 St. James's Street. London. (the building was designed by Richard Norman Shaw for the Alliance Assurance Company in 1901) but the first owner shown on the chassis cards is that of Hylton Ralph Murray-Philipson of Stobo Castle. Peebles. Stobo Castle had been bought by Hylton Murray-Philipson Snr in 1905 who then conveyed the estate to his son in 1924. Hylton Murray-Philipson Jnr was a pioneer aviator and had learnt to fly in 1927 - he actually owned his own aircraft – in 1930 enroute to LeBourget in France he crashed his de Havilland DH80 Puss Moth on the Goodwin Sands in Kent. ! His career consisted of being the C. O. of the City of Edinburgh Auxiliary Air Force Squadron. MP (Cons) for Twickenham; Chairman of N. E. Marine Engineering Co & a member of the King's Bodyguard for Scotland & the Royal Company of Archers. Hylton Murray-Philipson suffered from ill health & died in 1934 aged 32 leaving a widow & two young children. In 1939 his widow sold Stobo Castle to Wenefryde Agatha Scott. 10th Countess of Dysart. The 2nd owner of GNS75 is shown as John Stanley Coombe Beard of Grayshott Hall. Surrey. John Beard was an architect well known for designing over 100 cinemas in many styles – Baroque. Art Deco. Italian Renaissance. Greek Revival & Egyptian! In 1937 Mrs Beard made call to the police about an attempted burglary which resulted in the 1st arrest attributable to the new 999 service! The 3rd owner Colonel P. H. Lloyd of Stone House in Blaston has a connection with the 1st owner in that they were both company directors of Manvers Main Collieries Ltd – Murray-Philipson in 1923/33 and Lloyd in 1940/47.
