If you're a fan of '60s muscle. it seems like everywhere you turn you see Mopar this or GM that. It's almost as if a large segment of the hobby has simply forgotten about the hot full-size cars Ford produced during Detroit's golden era. Or. maybe it's just selective memory. And maybe GM and Mopar guys are too ashamed to admit that cars like this sweet Mercury Cyclone. believed to be 1 of 100 factory-prepped Indy pace cars. are much cooler and much more exclusive than their beloved classics. At any rate. the proof is on the pavement. And if you buy this fully sorted piece of Americana. you'll be able to school 'the other guys' on the road AND at the show. Are you a diehard Ford fan who's looking for some rock-solid muscle that's stylish. powerful and roomy enough to take your other-minded friends on enlightening journeys? Then this slick drop-top is just the car you need!

BODYWORK/TRIM

In typical '60s Motor City metric. Mercury's Cyclone. adorned with long surfaces and creases that stretch from stem to stern. is incredibly hard to get straight once it's been overhauled or reworked. Fortunately. the metal on this retro parade car has been subjected to a professional. concours restoration that involved excellent panel alignment and an astute attention to detail. Correct Cardinal Red 2-stage creates a nice foundation for familiar GT stripes and bright Indy 500 Pace Car decals. And items like a fiberglass. GT-specific hood. a bright white roof. a chrome driver's mirror and a variation of Comet and Cyclone badging lend the car just the right amount of detail.

ENGINE

Cyclones that actually paced the great race were equipped with moody 427s. For just looking good and putting wind in patrons' hair. parade cars made do with Ford's impressive 390 cubic inch Interceptor V8. As one of the hottest FE mills ever created. this highly regarded engine cranks out a conservatively rated 335 horsepower and runs every bit as good as its brilliant Ford Blue paint suggests. As you can see. the car's impressive engine bay has been carefully sprayed in a smooth coat of Satin Black paint. All the motor's ancillary components. from its fresh brake booster and Autolite Sta-Ful battery to its chrome valve covers and freshly decaled air cleaner. are present and accounted for. And this awesome drop-top. which is every bit as fast and potent as it was 49 years ago. is reliable and ready to hit the road!

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

At the bottom of this GT. solid floors and a beefy frame are supported by a rebuilt suspension that's clean and lucid. The muscular 390's power is transmitted rearward through a correct C6 3-speed and what appears to be a correct. 9-inch axle. At the front of that drivetrain. factory power steering mixes surprisingly tight turns with modern. responsive feedback. At the center of the floor. you'll find a free flowing. true-dual exhaust system that. thanks to a pair of glasspack-style mufflers. gives the big engine a deep and throaty voice. And at the corners of the car. power drum brakes. which supply quick and precise stops. ride behind styled steel wheels and meaty 215/65R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

INTERIOR

This Mercury's thorough restoration included the installation of a correct White and Red interior. Firm bucket seats ride between carpeted floor mats. a silver-trimmed console and a chrome shifter. A pliable dash. equipped with a Mercury AM radio. is augmented by a small tachometer. Silver-trimmed door panels nicely contrast Cardinal Red frames. Power top operation makes sunny day cruising as easy as the flip of a switch. In front of the driver. a 2-spoke. "Cyclone" branded steering wheel spins around a body-matched column. And behind the passengers. a fully restored trunk features a correct jack and full-size spare tire.
