1956 Plymouth Savoy

As many car collectors know. after World War II the immediate designs of 1947 through 1949 for most car manufacturers were pre-war design.   The truly new and great post war designs basically came out in 1955 and 1956 for Chrysler. General Motors and Ford.   These were the beginning years for the post-war psychology of styling and V8 muscle.

In 1955 & 1956. Plymouth came out with their advance looking design that replaced the old stodgy Plymouth 6-cylinder and “grandpa's car” look and put it into competition with Ford and Chevrolet.   It is true that Plymouth did not have anywhere near the production of Ford and Chevrolet during these years but the car in this ad is a testament of how good looking these Plymouths were.

Just to top off the fantastic design of the Plymouth 2-door sedan. that has become a favorite for many collectors. this car has been spiked up with an upgraded V8 Plymouth engine. 3-speed manual transmission on the floor. tachometer. gauges to replace the “idiot lights” and even a gauge to check to the rear differential temperature (how cool is that!).   This car is powerful enough to pull a medium sized trailer and the previous owner has done it on a few occasions and this explains the side view mirror on each door on the front doors and the front fenders.

This car is believed to always have been a dry state car and as the owner says he has had it up on a lift and it has no rust.   The body is straight and the paint job is extremely attractive.  Mileage was unknown at time of listing auction and eBay requires something. the 9999 is not accurate.

Just to top it off – when you thought that this car has everything. It also has air conditioning!  How cool will it be to take this car to a car show or a Saturday night drive-in because just about nobody has seen this model especially in this fine of condition.   You are sure to draw a crowd!

It is not hard to imagine that this car is extremely fast as it is the lightest in weight for all the full-size Plymouths of 1956.   While it may not be faster then a 1956 Corvette in the ¼ mile it certainly would not be far behind.    We consider this a rare opportunity to add a very rare car to any car collection.

The details above were supplied by the owner and the opinions of the design and rarity are supplied by the personal opinions of MissChiTown.

The following is a description of the car as supplied by the owner for your scrutiny.

The car was purchased from an 86 year old gentleman who loved to drive this car.   As you can see the paint is fairly recent and looks beautiful.   The previous owner said it was a very solid car with no rust when he had it painted.   He also upgraded the car with a period 1956 Plymouth V8 (replacing the original six cylinder).   The V8 is matched with a 3-speed overdrive on the floor.   As we mentioned the previous owner enjoyed driving this car and added a bug deflector on the hood. extra mirrors and special gauges.   The gauges include Temp for Rear End. Altimeter. Oil Pressure and Fuel Pressure. however these gauges could be easily removed.

The current owner has indicated that he believes it has always been a ‘dry state' car because he has not found any rust on the car.   He has included many. many up close detail photos so a bidder can get a good idea of how nice this car looks up close.   (Please see video for many more photos).   The car also has an after market (probably from the 1950s) Tachometer.

The current owner was so thrilled when he found this car that he quickly bought it and happily jumped in the car and drove it 350 miles home without a problem.   The current owner tells us that he has enjoyed the car and the only thing he has done to the car is to put two new Eaton Detroit Springs with insulator in the car.   He also tells us that the radiator is brass and it never heated up on the 350 mile trip when he purchased the car in 2011.   The V8 241 c. i. 2 barrel carburetor engine was shop built.   He says the car gets 17 mpg on the highway.   The horn does not work and the horn ring is cracked on one side.   The radio works.   After market mud-flaps.   After market fog lights. The after market A/C blows cool and has two electric fans.   Seller stated that his a/c guy believes that the compressor needs a new front seal.   All of the coolant was removed and it is dry.   When the a/c guy had the car up on the lift the seller inspected the underside and it looked very good and no sign of rust.
