1942 Packard One-Eighty 2007 Formal Sedan

One of less than 7 believed to exist! Power windows and partition! Preserved well with shiny original paint and interior! Ready for CCCA touring events!

By the early 1940s. Packard had established itself as one of the world's premier automakers. Continual improvements to drivability and style meant that Packard's future looked bright…until WWII started. As Packard retooled their facilities to help build the liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin and V12 engines for American military aircraft and PT boats. automobile production dwindled and saw a steady decrease until the fateful day on February 9th. 1942. when the US government mandated that all manufacturers cease production and focus solely on the war. As a result. only 34. 46 cars were built in the model year (and only 6. 85 in the calendar year!) Of those. the senior 180 chassis with its 138 inch wheelbase and bespoke body configurations only accounted for 672 total units.

We find excitement in every vehicle but every once in a while. we are able to represent something truly special. Such is the case with this 1942 Packard Custom Super Eight 180 Model 1532 Formal Sedan. This largely preserved car wears most of its original Black paint and original Tan cloth interior. When the Packard 180 was introduced in 1940. it claimed to have the most powerful 8-cylinder motor in production; the original motor in this car has since been replaced with a 327ci Packard motor (engine stamp # G400068) from a 1948 Super Eight. good for 145 horsepower. The Packard 180 was the first vehicle to feature power windows and this car has them and they are fully functional. including the center partition. Additional features include dual side-mount spares. bumper guards font and rear. functional 2-speed electric wipers. functional Packard AM radio. functional clock. glare-proof rear-view mirror. turn signals. rear Jaegar clock. personal bar. dual vanities and a rear storage compartment (passenger side) and jump seat (driver side).

The car shows 68. 18 miles. which every indication shows is original. Trained eyes will come to the conclusion that most of the lacquer paint on the car is original. with further supporting evidence coming from our paint meter. Our records go back to 1970; we have a letter from the previous owner. Dr. Jim Hottel (an optometrist in Iowa City. IA). dated to September 23rd. 1970. In this letter. Dr. Hottel writes the new owner. also a doctor in Prairie Village. Kansas. that he had owned the car since 1958 (12 years). The letter claims that the interior was all original with rebuilt front cushions and that most of the paint. save for the hood. windshield and certain fenders. as being original. He made mention of a new naugahyde top in 1970. new fender cord in 1966. rear bumper chromed before 1958 and an engine rebuild by the University of Iowa Department of Engineering completed on 2/15/63 at 27. 10 miles. It was supposedly also driven and broken in properly for 2. 00 miles and then toured extensively after that. The car was featured in Classic Car Official Quarterly. Spring Edition 1961 on page 33. In 1994. the mileage was documented as 64. 80. During this Doctor's ownership. he lent the car to HBO to use in the 1995 movie Truman. starring Gary Sinise in a biographical account of our former president during WWII. The most recent owner of four years made an effort to preserve the car's outstanding road manners and rebuilt the driveshaft. u-joints and also the power window hydraulic system. which not only functions but raises the windows with haste! All maintenance has been kept up and undercarriage lubrication points have certainly had attention paid.

Today. the car remains in largely original condition and wears its age well! The chrome is very presentable and the paint is shiny despite being a little thin in some places. Mechanically. the car is outstanding; if nothing else. we would send our utmost compliments to the U of I Engineering Dept. ! This car is the epitome of the Packard reputation for drivability. We have had the car out extensively. including at modern interstate speeds. and have found it to be not only powerful but arguably as smooth and quiet as any modern luxury car. The brakes are strong. both front and rear heaters work. the motor is potent and the handling dynamics are better than any vehicle this big should have the right to be. This CCCA ready car is one of the most beautiful pre-war formal sedans made and this particular car presents a unique opportunity to own what is believed to be one of less than seven still in existence.
