model description

The Pontiac Grand Ville was the top-trim model in the division's full-sized line from 1971 to 1975. It displaced the Pontiac Bonneville which had served as Pontiac's top-trim model since 1958.

The Bonneville itself was not discontinued during this period. but was demoted in status. in effect replacing the discontinued Pontiac Executive. The Grand Ville and Bonneville shared a number of trim and design elements that distinguished them from the Catalina. but the 1971-72 Grand Ville's were built on a stretched wheelbase version of the GM "B" platform that nevertheless had identical interior dimensions to all other full-size Pontiacs.

In addition to more luxurious interior trimmings. the Grand Ville had distinctive chrome up front and taillight trim at rear to set it apart. The car was often seen with deluxe appearance options. such as sport wheels and vinyl tops. Rear fender skirts were featured on the 1973 to 1975 models.

Standard equipment on Grand Ville models included a 455 cubic-inch V8 engine (for 1971-74 models. a 400 cubic-inch V8 was standard and the 455 optional for 1975). Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission. power steering and power front disc brakes. Popular options included air conditioning. power windows and driver's seat. tilt steering wheel. cruise control. AM/FM stereo with tape deck and much more. One of the rarest options available on Grand Ville's and other full-sized Pontiacs during this period was the adjustable brake and accelerator pedals offered from 1974 to 1976.

condition

Exterior

The Florentine Red exterior paint on this Grandville is in very nice driver condition. As one can see in the photos. the finish has nice gloss. deep shine. and a smooth finish. Based on information from the cars only owners. we were told that most of the paint on the car is original and still in good condition as one can see in the photos. The chrome. stainless. and other bright work on the car is in very nice shape with no notable rust or pitting. The body is very straight and there are no signs of any visible rust on the car. We have included detailed photos of the areas on the car that are more prone to rust like the lower quarter panels and rockers. For a car with mostly original paint this Granville still shins and shows very well. although there are some places with filled in rock chips. and some light crazing below the rear window. there is a specific photo of the area below. There are no major scratches. scrapes. or blemishes in the paint that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some spots in the paint that around the car were too faint to show in in photos. but nothing that is really noticeable from five or ten feet away. The power top works well with no strain or binding in the mechanism. The top was just replaced and is in excellent condition with no rips. stains or holes. The convertible top boot is included and looks great. It actually fits the car well and has not shrunken badly like most soft boots. Please note that the car still has the correct convertible top glass. it has not been replaced with a cheaper plastic window. The tires appear to have almost no wear at all and the original wheel caps look great.

The Pontiac looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Window Date Codes

Driver's Front: IU - The "I" denotes June and "U" 1973 so the front driver's side window is original and correct. made in June of 1973.

Driver's Rear: JU - The "J" denotes May and "U" 1973 so the rear driver's side window is original and correct. made in May of 1973.

Passenger's Front: JU - The "J" denotes May and the "U" 1973 so the front passenger's side window is original and correct. made in May of 1973.

Passenger's Rear: IU - The "I" denotes June and "U" 1973 so the rear passenger's side window is original and correct. made in June of 1973.

Please note that ALL of the side glass on this car is original and correct as all pieces predate the car's body build date of the third week of June 1973 (06C). Original glass is a great indication that this car has no major accident history.

Interior

The Dark Red interior is in absolutely stunning original condition. it is really amazing how great this interior looks. It is truly one of the nicest original GM interiors that we have seen in a convertible. The seats look in person just as they do in the photos with no splits. tears. or signs of excessive wear and abuse in any way. they practically look new. Please note that these are the original seats. not some cheap after market replacements or covers. The rear seats look like no one has ever sat in them. The carpet. which is also original. is in awesome condition throughout the car as well with no holes or major stains. The car still retains its original Granville rubber floor mats. The wood grain looks great with no delamination. The original dash pad looks excellent with no cracks. fading. or warping. and the gauges look crystal clear and work as they should outside of the gas gauge. The power seat works properly in all directions. The original door panels still look great with no rips or tears or excessive fading and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The arms pads on the door panels are not crack on the front or the rear. which is a very common problem on these cars. The trunk is nicely detailed with the spare tire. jack. jack base. and lug wrench. The original AM radio is still in the car and works well. All interior and exterior lights work as they should as do the wipers. horn and blower motor but currently the AC system although factory complete is not blowing cold and most likely needs charged. GM interior for this era are not know to wear well. this is especially true for convertibles. The excellent condition of this totally original interior is a testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout it's life.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This car is in great mechanical condition. the way this car runs drives. and feels on the road are some of its strongest points. There are no issues at all with the drivability of this Grandville. The car starts right away every time. idles well. and runs great. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. The car drives terrifically; it feels excellent on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 80mph. braking to stoplight. and cruising through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises. vibrations. and the car performs quite well. The transmission shifts well throughout the power band. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This convertible has lots of power since it was ordered with the optional 455 cubic inch engine featuring 250 factory horse power. Also. the engine is very clean and nicely detailed. and factory original as one can see from the photos and included video. The a/c compressor clicks on as it should. but the climate control system does not work properly and blows hot air. It is very beneficial that the a/c system is intact and charged as that is the more expensive and difficult portion of the system to service. The complete drive line appears to have never been taken apart or modified in any way and remains in excellent stock condition to this day. The windshield wipers work as does the horn from all 3 buttons on the steering wheel. all power windows from both the main switch on the driver's door and each respective individual window switch. The radio works well as do all the interior and exterior lights. and the power locks. which are a common problem. Another very common problem on these cars is the convertible top mechanism. As one can see in the video. the convertible top on this car work amazingly well with no binding or problems with the mechanism or motor. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially with top down on a beautiful day.

This Grand Ville runs and drives as well as it looks.

Overall Condition

Overall. this 1973 Grandville is in great condition original overall condition. It gets A TON of attention going down the road. The pictures reflect the quality and condition of the car and how it really looks in person. A car is only original once and originality cannot be duplicated or reproduced. The condition. originality. and one owner history makes this Grandville almost impossible to match for anywhere near our asking price. While we completely believe that this car has original mileage of 61. 15 especially due to items like the original interior in excellent condition. the title is marked as "Nonactual. quot; due to a typo on a previous title years ago. The previous owners. which have known the car since new. emphasized that the mileage was original. Full size convertibles are highly collectible and make excellent and practical cars to use and drive. You can fit your entire family in the vehicle to take them out for the day or evening. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
