Discovered dormant for a number of years in a Vermont garage. I stumbled on this  iconic "jewel" by accident when doing research on another vehicle to replace my recently sold 1958 Pontiac Super Chief.  It was a delightful "Barn Find". of Mercury's last year production of a chassis incorporating "Suicide" doors.
Restored perhaps a decade(s) or more. its in fabulous condition. exhibiting absolutely NO rust issues. and in very nice condition. Original floors. trunk deck. nbsp;body mounts. with evidence of right and left rockers having been nicely and professionally  replaced. as well as a rock solid and exceptionally clean painted frame and suspension system which steers and  tracks nicely with no noises. clunks. or drifts.
a rebuilt 1953 255 Cubic Inch Flathead  V-8 Mercury engine. producing a whopping 125 hp @ 3800 rpm (just kidding. but no. really) with 7. 2:1 compression.  coupled to a three speed manual transmission with Overdrive. and a 3. 91 differential gear ratio  it runs . drives. and shifts fabulous. with no smoke. grinds. unusual noises. and idles smoothly and quietly. as is so characteristic of a well running V-8 Mercury Flathead engine. Highway speeds are great with the Overdrive transmission allowing comfortable cruising at 60+ mph.   I have additionally replaced the engine oil and filter (10/30 Pennzoil with Zinc additive). all the gear oils.  Champion spark plugs. points. nbsp;condenser. air filter oil bath.  flushed and replaced the engine antifreeze(correct green). installed a new 6 volt battery. completely greased/lubricated the suspension (zerk fittings).  cleaned and silicone treated the wiring. and replaced the drive V belts.  The exhaust system is in very nice condition and has a  nice and mellow tone to it. exemplifying the unique sound of a Mercury Flathead V-8 engine.
The  drum brakes are recently replaced. and the clutch works great with no chatter. and engages like new.
Refinished at some point in its life in a Luxor Maroon two stage (base/clearcoat) finish. the paint is in very nice condition with no evident fading or cracking. and only minor chips(touched up) at the hood cowl intersection and some other miscellaneous edges hardly noticeable.  Ideally. for a much nicer finish. a few areas could be wet sanded and buffed to remove some dirt flecks and a few fish eyes in the clear coat. however. the Mercury's finish shows very nicely under normal viewing.

The Mercury's chrome is original. and exhibits its 63 years of weathering and patina. resulting is some dulling down and minor pitting. I have chosen to leave it alone. maintaining some of the originality of the car.  The stainless steel trim is overall very nice. complete. and has a few minor dents here and there.
All the Mercury's glass and window operation are in very nice condition with no real fading. bubbling or cracks.  All the windows open and close very nicely. and their channel felt is in great condition.
Interior upholstery is in great condition with the exception of a separation in the cloth to the drivers side top bench seat.  It appears the seats were rebuilt. nbsp;re-foamed. nd reinforced at the time of restoration.  They feel great and supportive when sitting in them.
All the exterior lights. gauge lights. etc.  turn signals. windshield wipers. and controls function as originally designed.  The speedometer is sometimes schizophrenic. however I have a  additional complete cluster unit (speedo.  all gauges. and clock) with functioning speedometer should it completely fail.   The radio is inoperative thus. have an additional radio which will be sold with the car which the previous owner informed me functions.  The car is also equipped with a functioning heater. nbsp;which for many who do not know this. was a option when purchasing the car new. Additional interior twin temperature gauges. discretely mounted to the lower center dash. monitor the right and left bank cylinder head coolant temperature. A "nice to have" feature.
The Mercury's wheels are 15 inch.  fitted with  matching radial whitewalls and original 1957 Cadillac hubcaps for that retro" American Graffiti " look.  The rear wheel side skirts are the original steel and can be easily unclipped depending on how you want the car to look.
In conclusion. this is a really fun. great for cruise nights Merc. which is for all intents and purposes. a quality driver which runs and drives fabulous. with no excuses.  It is not concourse. but presents itself very nicely and respectfully for a 63 year old vehicle. You can pretty much drive it anywhere.
And no. despite the rear windows declaration. I don't think the "Pharaohs" car club was in possession of this particular car although it is rather quick. capable of possibly outrunning the police in its day after some shenanigan.  But after 63 years. who knows?? Possibly Milner.
Finally. The Mercury Sports Sedan will be sold as is. where is. with no warranty expressed or implied.  I highly recommend personal inspection. or by  your contracted appraiser. prior to auction end. I will not permit such after auction end as a condition of sale. Please do your due diligence beforehand. It's not what you expect. but what you inspect.
I additionally reserve the right to end the auction early given the "Merc" is for sale locally. or if I receive a "reasonable" offer at or near my reserve.
Benchmark prices are available for the Mercury from NADA. Haggerty. and Old Cars Report as guide. and to set the expectation as to the value of these lovely and iconic cars.  Restoration of the Merc to its current nice(restored) condition would far exceed these published prices. but to the collector. this dynamic is well understood. (apologies)

To answer numerous phone calls regarding the condition of the Mercury. it is a very nice "uncorrupted" example of this year. No cutting. modifications. panel replacements (other than the two rockers) and no evidence of any accident damage or bondo filler that I can observe.  A very respectable. and nicely presented car to be enjoyed for years. Hope this helps.
