A quote from Richard Lentinello. Editor. Hemmings Muscle Machines article 2004.

“If you poll GTO owners or even muscle car enthusiasts in general. nbsp;

chances are the 1965 GTO would top everyone's list”.

CAR OF THE YEAR FOR 1965

One of the most iconic cars in muscle car history is the 1965 Pontiac GTO.   At this time. DeLorean was unquestionably the idea man for Pontiac Motor Division.   Not only did he have innovative ideas but he was also as history will show. one of the great automotive designers.   It is him and him alone that came up with the idea of taking a midsize Pontiac Tempest and dropping in a large and powerful V8 Pontiac motor and calling it a GTO.   The rest is history.

Muscle car rage is considered to have started with the 1964 Pontiac GTO and continued on for approximately a decade.   Pontiac was the firstest with the mostest out of the gate and became the benchmark car to beat at the drag races.

DeLorean not only came up with the idea of a muscle car but also stylized it with a fantastic interior that included bucket seats. center console and in some cases three deuce for carburetion.   DeLorean was not afraid to break the rules at General Motors and pushed for an edgy. sporty car that would appeal to the younger market…and boy did it!

The car that you see for sale in this ad is 1965 Pontiac GTO that had a frame off restoration in the late 1990s and all parts that were in poor condition or that were not up to snuff were replaced so that the car would be a fully restored car.   The owner tells us that this car is equipped with 389 tri-power engine matching numbers but not the original. and has a Muncie 4-speed transmission.    The block is topped off with 400 heads and tri-power.   New frame.   As you can see form the pictures the car makes an excellent presentation both in condition and in equipment.   We love the bucket seats and the center console and we can't think of a better color scheme for this GTO then the Triple Black!

The seller tells us that the paint is in good shape but not  show condition. the chrome is good to excellent. with a very good interior.   The car runs. starts cold. start hot and is an excellent driver as it should.  For the winning bidder the seller will include a copy of the PHS (Ponitac Historical Society) build card.  The car was built as a GTO in December of 1964 and was originally painted Blue Charcoal with Parchment and Black interior and white top.

NOTE: WINDOW IN CONVERTIBLE TOP Rear window is intact and operates fine.   The seller said he just didn't zip it up.  It is clear and has no tears or discoloration.

From what we are told from the Pontiac experts it was not unusual for frames to develop small spots of rust but over time would accumulate with pockets of water into small holes.   During the restoration it was felt that at the quality level that they were shooting for they did not want to have a frame that had no holes so therefore used the replacement frame.

Serious bidders. we can email you pictures of the frame that replaced the original frame.   Also we can email photos of the replacement frame used along with a copy of page 17 of the GTO restoration guide showing a box frame and its specifications that are correct.   WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO FORWARD THESE PHOTOS AT YOUR REQUEST.

The following is information taken from the internet and the fact that DeLorean had his design imprint on the car.   The GTO name was DeLorean's idea. was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO. the successful race car (an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato).

The Tempest line. including the GTO. was restyled for the 1965 model year. adding 3. 1 inches (79 mm) to the overall length while retaining the same wheelbase and interior dimensions. It had Pontiac's characteristic vertically stacked quad headlights. Overall weight increased about 100 lb (45 kg). The brake lining area increased nearly 15%. Heavy-duty shocks were standard. as was a stronger front antisway bar. The dashboard design was changed. and an optional rally gauge cluster ($86. 08) added a more legible tachometer and oil pressure gauge. An additional option was a breakerless transistor ignition.

The 389 engines received revised cylinder heads with re-cored intake passages and high rise intake manifolds. improving breathing. Rated power increased to 335 hp (250 kW) at 5. 00 rpm for the base 4—barrel engine; the Tri-Power engine was now rated 360 hp (270 kW) at 5. 00 rpm. The 'S'-cammed Tri-Power engine had slightly less peak torque rating than the base engine 424 lb·ft (575 N·m) at 3. 00 rpm versus 431 lb·ft (584 N·m) at 3. 00 rpm. Transmission and axle ratio choices remained the same. The three-speed manual was standard. while two four-speed manual transmissions (wide or close ratio) or two-speed automatic were optional. [6]

The restyled GTO had a new simulated hood scoop.  Another cosmetic change was the black "egg-crate" grille.

Car Life tested a 1965 GTO with Tri-Power and what they considered the most desirable options (close-ratio four-speed manual transmission. power steering. metallic brakes. rally wheels. 4. 11 limited-slip differential. and Rally Gauge Cluster). with a total sticker price of $3. 43. 79. With two testers and equipment aboard. they recorded 0–60 miles per hour (0–97 km/h) in 5. 8 seconds. the standing quarter mile in 14. 5 seconds with a trap speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). and an observed top speed of 114 miles per hour (182. 4 km/h) at the engine's 6. 00 rpm redline.

Sales of the GTO. abetted by a marketing and promotional campaign that included songs and various merchandise. more than doubled to 75. 42. It spawned many imitators. both within other GM divisions and its competitors.

Because this car is not in show condition and was restored over a decade ago with ago with many original and N. O. S. parts. the owner has put a very low reserve on the car.   From our point of view there might as well not be a reserve on this car.   Be that as it may. this is not a show car but a wonderful car for touring and for the Saturday night drive in.   Keep in mind that the 1965 Pontiac GTO in terms of design. not only was it fabulously popular when it first came out but it continues to be one of the most popular collector muscle cars today.   The GTO is one of the most sought out cars for anyone who wants a full muscle car collection from the 1960s.   The people here at MissChiTown owned a 1966 Pontiac GTO 4-speed and said without a doubt that it is the most fun car to drive of any of the muscle cars of the 1960s.   Therefore if you are looking for a car for your collection or just one collector car in your garage. this 1965 Pontiac GTO could certainly make you very happy.
