Model History

In 1958. the PV544 was phased in. Subtle differences with the PV444 included the introduction of a curved one-piece windshield to replace the two panes of flat glass. larger taillights. and a ribbon-type speedometer. The 444's 3-speed manual transmission was also supplanted by a 4-speed unit in the 544. The next significant change occurred in 1962. when the B16 was replaced by Volvo's new B18 engine. initially developed for the P1800 sports car introduced the previous year. This 1. 8 L engine had five main bearings. Again single and twin carburettor versions were offered. designated B18A and B18D. respectively. The U. S. market saw very few[vague] B18A cars since the United States' public prioritised performance over fuel economy. Also in 1962. Volvo changed from 6- to 12-volt electrical systems. In 1963 Volvo began producing the 544 at their new Canadian Dartmouth/Halifax plant. the first Volvo plant to be located outside of Sweden. The 544 received incremental mechanical revisions and trim changes until its final production year of 1965. Exactly 440. 00 units were built during the 18-year run. The car had so endeared itself to its owners that Volvo ran self-deprecating advertisements in late 1965 and early 1966 imploring PV owners not to be angry with the company. The last 26 cars ever built were all in White and the Volvo staff were given Lottery tickets to win them . These were to become known as "the lottery cars". There are believed to be 12 known survivors left .

More Details

The very last PV was painted black. The 26 before that were painted white. and they were in a workplace lottery. so they are known as "the lottery cars". The black one is in Volvos museum in Gothenburg. In 1993 a gentlemen traced them all and wrote down their history. -13 of them did still exist. although one was just a wreck parked in the woods. We have attached a Picture of these cars which this is believed to be one of those pictured. It's one of the last PV544s ever manufactured by Volvo. Only 3400 G models were manufactured. and only the last of these were produced in California White. I'm told that the G models were manufactured between August and October 1965. although I have the original Swedish registration document. which gives the model year as 1966 and the registration date as 16 May 1966. The previous owner bought the car from the original owner in 1977 and drove it for many years in Sweden. before bringing it over to the UK in 1987 and owning the car in the uk until early 2014. Making this a Tow owner from new car . ne in Sweden and One in the Uk. Varified by the V5. This makes this car very collectable. With low owners and low miles and a lot of work to bring this car back to a very nice example . It is now ready to be used and shown . Very respectable everywhere . nderneath is sold and waxoiled. he Paint is very good and though described as White we would say it is Cream . The interior is original and in very good order.
