We are proud to offer this exceptional and rare example of a
Triumph TR4 Police car. 4100 HJ was supplied new to Southend-on-Sea
County Borough Constabulary in May 1962 via Easton Automobiles. br/>Standard Triumph agents Leigh-on-Sea. The car was equipped with a
Pye radio. Winkworth bell. air horns. spot lamps. reversing lamp. br/>windscreen mounted hand operated lamp. front and rear Police signs. br/>rear stop sign. wing mirrors and a
calibrated speedometer; all of which. with the exception of the
speedometer. was fitted in the constabulary's own workshops. The
optional overdrive was also fitted along with Goodyear Roadspeed
tyres. Eventually the car was retired from the police force and
passed through several owners before turning up in Somerset in the
late 70's.

In 1991 the vendor acquired the TR4 in a somewhat dilapidated
state. The car was stored until the decision was taken to restore
4100 HJ to the original police specification. An extensive
restoration followed and was completed to the highest standards to
represent as closely as possible the original condition and police
specification. Such was the attention to
detail that where special equipment was missing. the items were
sourced with the assistance of the enthusiastic members of Police
Car UK.

After a request for any background information regarding the car
was made via the Essex Law magazine. a surprising number of
responses were received from officers of the day. Superintendent
Bill Burles (pictured standing next to the car) allocated it the
task of 'fast pursuit car' - which it performed very well according
to the drivers or observers of the car at the time. It went out on
2 shifts a day. 7 days a week. equating to approximately 1000 miles
a week! Officers invariably drove the car top down and always
wore their caps with chin straps in place.

Originally the car had no seat belts and one officer relates
that "he hung onto the underside
of the seat whilst in fast pursuit. " In no time the entire seat
was wrenched from the floor so the workshops welded stout plates to
the chassis and bolted the seats to these. Later. seat belts were
fitted.

The car also undertook some unusual journeys. One winter. amid
considerable snow and ice. a call came in from Southend Hospital to
deliver an urgent drug from London. There were no helicopters
available in those days so the TR4 was pressed into service and the
journey was completed in double quick time despite the perilous
conditions. much to the satisfaction of the hospital and patient in
particular.

Since restoration. this rare police car has been maintained to
the highest standards as may be verified by an inspection of the
car. The history file contains a copy of 'Advanced Driving
Explained' by Inspector W. H. Jobson; price one shilling and six
pence. with a picture of 4100 HJ on the front cover. There is also
a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate verifying the
car's provenance. Such is the scarcity of an example of a
police TR4 that Vanguard Models have produced 1500 limited 'Special
Edition' models based on this actual car and displaying its
registration number. 4100 HJ; an example of which also comes
with the car.

Due to its rarity and originality. this represents a unique
opportunity for any serious enthusiast and/or collector to use for;
pleasure. promotion or film work or for possible entry into
historic events such as the Goodwood Revival. Possessing a current
MoT test certificate and current historic status road fund licence. br/>this exceptional TR4 is ready for immediate use.
