Snippets –Engineers. Dutch Oil & Ridley Families:
Sir John Arthur Aiton (1864/1950) (Kt1937) was born in India - his father was an engineer on the railway lines. Sir John's wife was of Dutch extraction - Adriana Wihlelmina Stoop; her father was an oil explorer (Dordtsche Petroleum) who in 1910 merged his firm with Royal Dutch Shell. Adriana's sister Anna was married to “Guus” Kessler whose father was the founder of the Royal Dutch Shell company! Sir John Aiton. like his father. was an engineer of some note who specialised in producing pipe-work for chemical plants. power stations & ocean liners - customers included the Battersea & Dunston Power Stations alongside the QEII Liner. Adriana & John Aiton's daughter Nora was a noted architect who set up the first all female architectural firm with her business partner Betty Scott – one of their first commissions was Sir Aiton's factory in Derby. Nora was close to her Dutch cousins & in 1952 Mr J. B. A. Kessler gifted her a Raoul Dufy oil-painting entitled “Kessler Family on Horseback” for her to enjoy during her lifetime. Sir Aiton only used GGR21 for just 12 months before she was with her 2nd family - Walter Colborne Ridley of Ingoldisthorpe Manor. The Ridley family were early motorists & in 1906 they had no less than 5 De Dion-Boutons at the family home of Docking Hall! There is a photo of this in the 1906 “Automobiles” by Stanley Spooner & if anyone has a copy we would love to see it. Walter Ridley was a scion of the White-Ridley family of Blagdon & there are many interesting relations via marriage – Colborne (Apothecary) Lord Wensleydale (Judge). Edwin Lutyens (Architect). Dudley Coutts (Banking) to name but a few. Walter Colborne Ridley was one of 8 children. and he & two of his brothers played cricket on a national level. Walter passed away in 1940 having owned GGR21 for less than a year.
