The time that I never thought would come. officially has.  I spent over two years searching for just the right 544 and when I found this one it took me another year to wrestle it away from the owner.  I am the third owner of this car since it was imported into the Boston area as a new car sometime back in 1959.  I have owned it since 2005 and purchased it from the second owner out of Quebec. Canada.  He owned a movie/television/advertising prop rental company at the time and was selling this particular car to reduce some inventory.  He told me that the car was cosmetically restored about 12 years prior to me purchasing it but that mechanically it was mostly all original with the exception of some maintenance items and repairs over the years.  Therefore it is an older restoration and a true collector may want to have it redone.  If you are looking for a very solid car to start a ground up project or maybe you want to buy a very nice Sunday driver. cruise night. car show fun to poke around in classic car this would serve you very well.  If you are looking for a daily driver. I would ask you to pass on this one as it doesn't deserve to be beaten up daily even though it is a shining example of superb Swedish engineering and would probably smack you in the side of the head with a herring if you tried to abuse it. I wouldn't really want to sell it to you for that purpose.  This car needs to go to someone that will appreciate it and take care of it for years to come.
When I first found this car for sale it was right here on eBay.  A broker was selling it for the then owner and I was the high bidder on it. twice.  Unfortunately each time the reserve was not met and the owner no-saled it.  After the second time I tried to negotiate a deal and was told that the owner was going to put it away for the winter and try again in the spring and I was welcome to try again at that time.  Over the winter. my computer had crashed and I lost all the contact info for this car.  I was heart broken but I remembered some of the details I was given while I was trying to make the deal the previous year.  I was told that this car was a prop car and was in the movie "Catch me if you can" starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio.  (It appears in the opening sequence when Hanks visits the prison that DiCaprio is being held in.  The car is seen directly behind Hanks in the courtyard during a rain storm. )  I rented the movie. looked through the credits and found the company that was in charge of the props and contacted them.  They were able to get me in contact with the owner of the car and I reached him and made the purchase.  While I do not have nay certificates of authenticity to prove my story. I do have the real life experience and memories of everything that occurred leading up to my purchase and I can tell you more amusing anecdotes about the journey if you are interested when you come to pick up the car after winning the auction.
I have a 3-4 inch ringed binder that contains original and photocopied repair manuals for this car.  These are the technician binders that Volvo Cars would use at the dealerships to fix and maintain these cars when they were still in regular use.  Everything you could want to know about this car can be found in there.  This will come with the winning bid along with 2 sets of keys. an owners manual (pictured in photos below). a box with some misc. spare parts (mostly carburetors). a set of new king pins and I also have a refurbished gas tank and a spare rear end available for sale should you be interested in purchasing these seperately.  The car also comes with original / vintage rubber floor mats and trunk liner. spare tire. tool kit and jack. additional radio face plate (also pictured below) and the OEM Volvo 544 license plate seen on front of the car.  This plate was used by dealers when these cars were sold as new in the dealerships to advertise what model car customers were looking at.
This 1960 PV 544 is a 6 volt electrical system and a 4 speed manual transmission.  It has a 1. 6 liter 4 cylinder engine and dual SU H4 carburetors with vintage reusable air cleaners.  I put a new battery in last year but have not tuned the car in about 3 years.  I do not drive it much any more and that is mainly the reason I am selling it.  I no longer have the time to enjoy it and find each year to be driving it less and less.  It comes out of the garage maybe once or twice a year and it deserves to see daylight more often than I can accomodate.  The car runs well and shifts well.  If you are seriously interested in this car I can make it available to you to see and drive in person prior to the end of the sale if you wish to inspect it personally.  The car is located in Dutchess County. NY.  I have nothing to hide and encourage you to ask as many questions as possible to make your decision to bid on this car as easy as possible.  Look at the pictures and you will be able to see how nice a car it is.
I bought the Coker Classic wide white wall tires back in 2006 and have hardly driven on them so they have plenty of tread left but are starting to age.  I do not see any signs of dry rot. flat spotting or damage but 8 years is a long life for a tire.  The sunshade over the front windshield is a special order vintage style acessory that I ordered from a company called Scandcar out of the Netherlands.  They only make small batches and are tough to get.  If you are interested in getting one for your PV let me know and I can get you their info if you can't find them yourself online.
This car won a People's Choice award at Volvo Sports America's West Point. NY show in 2005 and won Best in Class and Best in Show at Volvo Sports America's national meet in Cape May NJ in 2006.  It has also trophied at several cruise nights and local car shows in my region.  It is a guarantee that this will be one of only a very small handful of Volvos that show up at any car show so it always gets a lot of attention and questions asked about it.  It is fun to drive and has been very reliable.
Winning bidder is expected to send a $500 deposit via PayPal within 24 hours of auction end and to pick up the car within 10 days of auction end.  The car runs and drives so loading on a trailer will be easy.  Car can be driven away as well but since I have not driven it much the past few years I cannot guarantee you can drive it across country.  The longest drive I ever made with it was from Dutchess County NY to Cape May NJ and back.  It did very well and averaged about 30 mpg but that was back in 2006.  Since then it mainly gets driven only within about an hour or so of my home.
I have a flikr. com album available with 75 photos for further inspection of this car.
