Originally called the Daimler Regina DF400. the DK400 was Daimler's large. grand luxury automobile designed to replace the Straight Eight series and built from 1954 to 1959. Aside from its commanding presence. incredible comfort and rarity. it is noteworthy as the last Daimler model fitted with the Fluid Flywheel and pre-selector gearbox. a feature that had gone back to 1930. The DK400 was generally fitted with limousine bodywork by Carbodies. but of the less than one-hundred cars produced just six examples of the DK400 wore coachwork by Hooper & Co. of London. This gorgeous. stately 1956 Daimler DK400 Limousine is one of them. Part of a Daimler and Lanchester collection that was moved from Great Britain to North America about 25 years ago. it is understood to have been built for the Chairman of the Fraser Group. a company that had acquired dozens of department stores across Great Britain. Resplendent in high quality dark blue and silver paint. it is a signature expression of Hooper's characteristic coachwork feature known as the “Hooper Line”. a sweeping element flowing from the peak of the front fender back through the doors and dramatically down to the characteristic teardrop-shaped rear fender skirts. The original interior is lavish. as expected from a limousine of this caliber. The grey leather front seats show only light wear. while the tan cloth seats in the rear is very well preserved. The windows are power operated in the front. manually operated in the rear. and a there is a power-operated division. a clock in the division partition and folding jump seats. This is a very pleasing car to look at. pleasing car to be in and pleasing car to own. It has a presence that can only be described as regal. appropriately enough for the favored automobile of Britain's Royal Family. and the preserved state of its interior recalls the time almost sixty years ago when elites were lucky enough to enjoy such individually specified. luxurious. coachbuilt cars.
