Snippets – The Hyphenated Gentlemen.
In February 1967 the T-Type was ordered by Frank Leslie John-Rogerson (John having been added by deed poll in 1918). his wife Eileen was a scion of the wealthy Joel & Isaacs family. Members of which included: Woolf Babe Barnarto Isaacs – racing driver & fast living playboy - eldest son of the South African “Randlord” & Diamond Merchant - Barnett “Barney Barnarto” Isaacs. Barney Isaacs died during a sea voyage in 1897 shortly after having had a heated discussion on deck with his nephew Solly Barnarto Joel (father of Eileen); many family members including Woolf's daughter Diana had little doubt that foul play had taken place. especially as Solly Joel ended up controlling the family business! Woolf was just 2 years old when he inherited his father's estate in its entirety. Eileen Joel enjoyed riding her father's racehorses & in 1925 (aged 18) she rode “Hogier” owned by Mrs Earl to 1st place in the 4 mile Newmarket Town Plate – of the other 8 riders 5 were ladies! For some unknown reason Frank Rogerson did not take delivery of SBH2508 & the order was transferred to Carl Brian Winstone-Partridge of Begbroke. Oxford – this unusual name is mentioned in The Domesday Book as “Bechebroc” meaning Becca's Brook. In 1947 Carl's father Hugh Ivor Partridge added “Winstone“ by deed poll to their surname but it is unknown why. Bizarrely enough Carl Winstone-Partridge also cancelled his order for the T-Type so the 3rd name on the chassis cards was the 1st owner. being S. M. Tidy of Brighton. a businessman & philanthropist who had the following named in his honour – Simon Tidy House. Simon Tidy Street. Simon Tidy Park. Simon Tidy Trophy in the Brighton Speed Trial & a couple of buses!
