When launched at the 1926 London Motor Show. the Talbot 14/45
designed by Georges Roesch caused something of a sensation. It
revitalised the declining fortunes of the company which had had
only small sales of its earlier 8/18 and 10/23 models. despite
their excellence and advanced contemporary design. The small
six-cylinder in-line engine of the Talbot 14/45 was just 1. 66cc
but it was achieved using advanced engineering and was fitted into
a relatively large chassis. It still provided adequate performance
even in the face of the large coachwork often fitted to the
chassis. The Talbot was now also well priced and as a large car was
fitted with large mechanical 14" diameter brakes to all four
wheels. The overhead valve engine had an automatic ignition with
advance & retard which was not yet common on British cars of
the late Vintage period.
From details gleaned from the buff logbook. it would appear that
the first owner was a Mr. J. E. Carpenter of Totteridge. London who
then sold it on to Mr. Rungeford. He continued to use it for 35
years until 1997 when the car went to a Mr. Richards in
Sittingbourne. Kent until 2008. Nigel Eastwood then had it for a
year before it was acquired by the current owner. The car itself
has benefitted from a good quality but sympathetic restoration in
1997; the interior however. has been largely left in its
original state. the condition of which is sound and still maintains
its patina. not to mention that distinctive smell that comes with
good quality leather and age. It has had little use recently but
started 'on the button' and ran well. It should be noted however
that new kingpin thrust washers are required; these are inexpensive
items in themselves however their fitting requires some effort.
Aside from this. it presents extremely well. has proved reliable in
the past and has been well looked after.
