Louis Renault produced his first motor car in 1898. in a small
workshop at his family home. It was not long before he began
to receive orders for additional cars to be built and within a few
months he had set up the company of Renault Frères. By 1912. br/>well over 10. 00 vehicles had been built. which amounted to one
fifth of all French private car production. The firm had also
sold vehicles in Britain since 1901. forming a British company
three years later. Renault were to become a major supplier of
taxis. particularly to the London Hackney carriage trade. Following
the Great War. the Renault range consisted of a 6-cylinder model
and three smaller vehicles powered by 4-cylinder engines. The
6-cylinder vehicle was of leviathan proportions. being powered by a
9. 1-litre engine while at the lower end of the scale was the KJ
model. built between 1922 and 1924. which was to continue as the NN
until 1929 and was Renault's answer to the Citroën 5 CV. Known as
the 8. 3 in Britain. where the car was particularly popular. it was
priced at £219 for the tourer version and was capable of a maximum
speed of 50mph with fuel economy being a frugal 40-45mpg.

This Renault Type NN is fitted with the original four door
tourer body which could be converted to a utility pickup. this was
done by removing the rear seats and unclipping the leather side
panels reviling wooden boards. at the back of the car is a large
tailgate. this was so the French farmer could take his produce to
market during the week and take his family to church on Sundays.
The Renault was purchased by the vendors in France to be used in
the 1988 Indiana Jones film The Last Crusade starring Harrison Ford
and Sean Connery. painted black it featured in the chase across the
desert ending with the fight scene on the back of a tank. Directly
after filming the Renault returned to the UK and was subject to a
complete rebuild which included a full engine rebuild and
repainting the car yellow. This Renault is supplied with a V5
registration document. a French registration. old MoT test
certificates and a file of invoices.
