1927 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 Saloon by Gustaf Nordberg

Chassis number: 122LC
Registration number: RR3 CMC (Danish. )

A very unusual phantom that has spent its life in scandinavia. When new the car was supplied with two bodies; an open torpedo for summer use. & an enclosed limousine for winter use. In 1946 just after the war the current limousine body was fabricated by Gustaf Nordberg of Stockholm & this is the body the car wears today.

Coming from Danish aristocracy who have owned the car for some years. it has been maintained absolutely without regard to expense & is one of the best driving Phantom 1's I have encountered. The steering is extremely light & precise in a way one rarely experiences with Phantoms. The engine is silent & powerful wafting along without a murmur at 60MPH up hill & down dale. The car was driven to us in London from Denmark & completed the trip in an effortless manner. You have to drive & hear this car to appreciate how good it is.

The Nordberg body takes the form of a 6 seat limousine. The front seats are trimmed in black snake skin. which whilst patinated is also very serviceable. To the rear the seats are of a patterned cloth extending to the door cards & twin fold out occasional seats. The dash board is fabricated from a solid sheet of brass. This was tarnished to dark black when the current owners acquired the car & hours of patient work by the scion of the family with a can of brasso leaves the dash in the resplendent condition we find it in today. Indicated mileage is 48. 00 which may well be correct given the tautness of the mechanics & absence of wear to the pedals.

The car was fitted from new with a heavily louvered colonial style body. The speedometer is also a continental specification unit calibrated in both MPH & KPH. A period St Christopher medal is mounted to the dash to ensure safe motoring with its surrounding text in german. To wit: Sanct Christophorus Lenk Unser Weg Schutz Unser Steg.

Recently painted the car is finished in deep red with black wings. the paint being close to perfect. A rear mounted luggage box by B. Hans Osterman is fitted. Inside the box is a large waxed canvas tool roll containing a close to full compliment of small & large tools. The running boards are of honduras mahogany & are particularly fine examples with deep grooves routed out of the timber drained by brass ringed holes.

The car developed a very slight exhaust blow on the way over. This was fixed by The Priory Vintage Car Company & whilst there had the knowledgeable eye of Carl Ford cast over it who pronounced the car a far far above average example in impeccable running order & commenting that if all the cars that came to him were in this condition he would be quickly out of business.

The car comes with its original Manual for the care & running of the car. There is also a thick history file detailing what has been done & when with the earliest correspondence dating back to 1931. Letters to Rolls Royce in 1962 detail the then owner asking for correct torque settings for the head. the response from RR being to throw away the torque wrench & simply use a 6" tommy bar to tighten the studs by feel working from the inside nuts outwards. A 1960's compression test indicates all cylinders to be mid 60's
