Engine: 6 cyl. 2. 3 litre

Gearbox: 4 speed manual.

Launched at the 1935 Motor Show. the SA represented a new departure for MG.

The first all-new model to be introduced since the company's acquisition by Morris Motors. it was considerably larger than any previous MG and caused a certain amount of consternation amongst enthusiasts who feared an abandonment of virtues embodied by the marque's nimble sports cars.

They need not have worried. for although based on the Wolseley Super Six and aimed at the luxury car market. the SA received sufficient input from MG founder and designer Cecil Kimber to transform it into a car worthy of the famous octagon badge.

Originally of 2. 26cc. the overhead-valve Wolseley six had been enlarged to 2. 88cc by the time SA production commenced and was further stretched to 2. 22cc in 1937.

With 75bhp propelling a car weighing around a ton-and-a-half. acceleration was necessarily leisurely; nevertheless. the SA could cruise comfortably at 60-70mph and had a genuine top speed approaching 85mph.

A Tickford-bodied drophead coupé and Charlesworth-bodied open tourer completed the range.

Approximately 20 Charlesworth-bodied tourers were built. this example of which is believed to be the only one resident in the UK.

Owned by an American serviceman immediately after WW2. it was discovered lying derelict in a Hampshire field in the early 1980s and subsequently rebuilt to concours standard. with the brief of retaining originality at all cost. by SVW Services. specialists in the larger MG models.

This is an extremely rare MG. Of the 90 SA tourers that were built there are only 18 survivors. Of those 18 only 7 have this body type and of those only 5 are roadworthy and this being the only one known in the UK. Not only is this roadworthy but it is in fabulous condition having had a first class and well documented restoration some years ago finished in 1994

Upon the completion the SA was put into proffesional heated storage and covered some 4 miles until late 2012. this no doubt explains the outstanding condition of this rare SA.

This must be one of the finest 4 seater tourers available today and at half the price of a Derby Bentley great value for money.

Comments and questions to the seller:

from Per Lund-Mathiesen, dated 05 august 2018
What a coincidence! It is my old car! As a student in Edinburgh I bought it for £ 100 in 1956. It had earlier been a police car. It had a bullet hole in the right front window. We were 4 students driving through the continent to Oslo in June 56, shipped it to Newcastle in October and drove back to Edinburgh where I later sold it again. I shall be happy to send some photographs. Regards
