'The best combination of brute force and tractable street manners we've ever driven. ' - Car & Driver on the 1966 Plymouth Satellite Hemi.

Introduced in 1965 as top-of-the-range model of Plymouth's mid-size Belvedere line-up. the Satellite became available with Chrysler's legendary 'Hemi' 426ci (7. 0-litre) V8 engine for 1966. Adding around $1. 00 to the list price. this 'Street Hemi' engine was quoted as producing 425bhp at 5. 00rpm and 490lb/ft of torque at 4. 00 revs. figures generally accepted as being conservative. The quoted performance figures were 5. 3 seconds for the 0-60mph sprint and 13. 8 seconds for the standing quarter-mile with a terminal speed of 104mph. When specified. the Hemi was complemented by a host of performance enhancing extras including heavy-duty suspension and Police-grade 11" drum brakes. Only 848 Satellite Hemis were manufactured in 1966. 534 of which were equipped with the optional automatic three- or four-speed transmission. This is an exceptionally rare car. even in America.

The Satellite Hemi Coupe offered here is finished in Citron Gold (a light metallic green) with matching interior and is presented in near concours condition. having benefited recently from a 2. 00-hour restoration costing over £78. 00 (approximately $129. 00 USD). (It should be noted that the engine has not yet been run in). In addition to the aforementioned engine and suspension. this car's impressive specification includes power-assisted steering. servo-assisted ventilated disc brakes and a '727' three-speed automatic transmission. The Satellite has been built with a mix of new-old-stock parts and some reproduction ones - the n-o-s Delco battery cost £500 ($ 830 USD) on its own. Everything is correct right down to the French-polished mahogany sports steering wheel. new B F Goodrich Red Line radial tyres and original spinner hub caps. Not surprisingly. the bodywork. paintwork. interior trim. engine and transmission are all in excellent order.

This Satellite Hemi has been in the UK since 1975. with only two owners in the last 18 years. and is probably the best example this side of the Atlantic. It is sold complete with a large history file that includes a four-page letter from Galen Govier (the world renowned Mopar guru) and the original factory build sheet and fender tag detailing all the factory-fitted options. Registered 'JKE 428D' in the UK. the car is licensed and MoT'd to the end of October 2014. Rare and exciting muscle cars do not come much better than this extraordinary 1960s icon. With its near space-age design and all the power you will ever need. step into the future whilst still relishing the past…….
