Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.05) based on 297 votes
Originally bodied by Weymann as a Saloon. in the early 1980s. this car was very competently re-bodied by C. A. R. S. Ltd of Cheltenham with the current. rather appealingly quirky Dr's Coupe coachwork. being a tall two seater. which is very substantially built. and incorporating a small dickey seat in the rear. At the same time. there was a great deal of other good quality work carried out. including engine overhaul. re-wiring. nickel work. and thorough cleaning. preparation and painting of the chassis prior to the body being mounted. Offered newly MoT tested.

Chassis No. GYL44. Reg No. DJ 3564. £37. 00.

Snippets – Connections of Warwickshire & Worcestershire.

Douglas James lived at The Dell on Hartopp Rd in Four Oaks. named after Sir Edmund Cradock-Hartopp of Four Oaks Hall. The Hall was built in the late 1600s for the 3rd Baron Folliott of Ballyshannon. after his death in 1716 his widow remained at Four Oaks until her death in 1751. Subsequent owners of the estate included: Simon Luttrell 1st Earl of Carhampton (father-in-law of Prince Henry. Duke of Cumberland). Rev Thomas Gresley. Sir Hugh Bateman 1st Baronet of Hartington Hall and thence to the Cradock-Hartropp family who sold the estate in the late 1870s to a race-horse company. they had the first race meeting in 1881 and also ran the Grand National that same year. In 1890 the Marquis of Clarikarde acquired the estate which he then developed into a residential estate. architects involved in the design of the houses included C. E. Bateman & Sir Edwin Lutyens. By 1946 GYL44 is shown on the chassis cards as being with Sir Sydney Lea of Dunley Hall in Stourport. The Lea family have long been associated with the County of Worcester as clothiers. millers & carpet manufacturers. their family homes included Amiens House (renamed The Lakes after the peace treaty with France collapsed!). Dunley Hall which between 1892 & 1902 was leased to Stanley Baldwin (later to be Prime Minister) & his family. his cousin was Rudyard Kipling and his uncles the artists Edward Poynter (Cave of the Storm Nymphs & King Solomon) & Edward Burne-Jones (The Beguiling of Merlin & The Golden Stairs). After the lease on Dunley Hall ran out Stanley Baldwin purchased another of the Lea properties – Astley Hall where he lived until his death in 1947.
