 Jaguar 240 – 1967  ( Retro fitted 340 engine & big bumpers) 89. 90 miles

I  am reluctantly selling my Mark  2 Jaguar as I no longer have the time or energy to proceed with what started as a labour of love. but now that I am older. and less fit. it has become less of a pleasure and it needs someone with more time and skill than I have.

It was purchased by my father in March 1979. and transferred to myself in May 1986.

MCP 395 started life as a standard British racing Green 240. reg LVY 765F manual with overdrive. and over the years I have made various upgrades.

The original engine had got a little noisy. probably just timing chains. and having acquired all the appropriate  bits. I discovered someone selling a complete 340 engine (from a beautiful car the seller had  decided to convert to manual by fitting a 3. 8 E Type engine and gearbox). Thus I acquired . and eventually fitted an engine that had then completed just under 80. 00 miles. which was coincidentally. very close to the mileage my car had done. being manufactured a few months apart. That was during 1985/6. and somewhere in the process. my car was stripped down to its shell. new inner and outer sills fitted. new front cross member. crows feet. jack points. rear valance. plus repair sections used to replace rot in front wings. and the doors re-skinned. and every thing repainted. I retained the 240's HS6 SU carbs and manual choke. although they were re jetted to suit the larger engine. The diff' was replaced with one with a more appropriate ratio from a 3. 8. It is supposed to be limited slip. but one Jaguar expert is not convinced. The engine was treated to new chains. dampeners etc. and the head had some valves replaced. and they were all cleaned up and ground in. A new. racing spec oil pump (ex Oldham & Crowther's part's sale) was also fitted.

However. when reassembled the door seals were not fitted before the doors were fitted. so some of them are still waiting to be installed! The front subframe was overhauled and the 240 front springs replaced with stiffer. cut down springs from a Mark 10 (obtained from Norman Motors in 1980's). The general idea was to use it for historic rallying. hence stiffer rear shocks. and spax adjustable's at the front.

Since then. it has had reconditioned dynamo fitted. and lots of running repairs and improvements. Stainless steel exhaust. Zeus fourpot front calipers. modern uprated starter motor. modern spin on oil filter conversion. Kenlow fan & the radiator was recored last year. Some of the chrome has either been replated or replaced. It is MOT'd until 5th June. and taxed ( free)  until end of May. It has red amblar interior rather than leather. but the carpets are long since gone. being faded and rotten. The wood work is just about OK. It was restored some years ago. but is now in need of attention again. The original 240. slim line bumpers have been replaced by the MK 2 big bumpers. although I have the originals available. I also fitted the auxiliary fog lights and changed the appropriate switch as these were deleted from the 240 standard specification.

However. as most of the body work was carried out some 30 years ago. some bubbles are appearing here and there. but nothing that I would consider serious.

The bad bits?

At present. it does have a mechanical problem. in that it will run happily for 15-20 minutes and then cut out. It seems to be overheating. hence last years change of radiator. I suspect water is not circulating properly. No scum when inspecting the oil filler cap. I am afraid that after messing about with this car for some 35 years I have now lost my patience!  Also. as previously mentioned. the body restoration is now nearly 30 years old and the odd bubble is appearing here and there. The heated rear screen ( yes it has one)  has stopped working as well! It is also difficult to engage reverse gear when engine has warmed up. The clutch tends to stick when car has been stood for a while. Some of these problema are proabably as aresult of the car being stood for long periods as it has only covered a few hundred miles in last 10 years.

Thus. it needs to be considered a part completed project. The registration number was transferred from my fathers earlier. 1960 Mark 2 Jaguar. and is only available by negotiation. . as it was originally an ‘F' registered car . when supplied by Kennings of York.

The vehicle may start and run. and have tax and MOT but is not drivable with its current problem.   Thus it will have to be trailered away.

I have lot's of paper work. old MOT's. Tax Discs. invoices. and will include quite a few spare parts with the vehicle. Some other parts will be negotiable.

Incidentally. I have a spare. standard 3. 4 cylinder head together with it's matching green logbook. from an older MK 2 available. However the 340 used a straight port head. which developed more power. and is reputed to be as good as a 3. 8 in terms of performance.

It will probably be best to inspect the vehicle. and as I do work. though self employed. I am available most of the time. providing enough notice is given.

I  will be intolerant of tyre kicking time wasters. who decide to travel hundreds of miles. expect to by it for a couple of thousand and drive it home….   Please read the advert!! The car cannot be driven any distance with it's current problem. MOT and Taxed it may be. but reliable it is not!

I have invested quite a lot of time. money. blood sweat and tears into this car over the years. It now needs someone else's  TLC. as I have another poorly cat to attend to (XJS ). and sadly. this one has to go!
