OWNERSHIP:

I have owned the car for 13 years. using it for local drives.   I have added enhancements. and performed the maintenance.

The restoration was commissioned by the former owner. who showed it and won several concourse competitions.

REASON FOR SALE:

Having recently retired. I have decided to pare down my stable of cars and move permanently from Florida to my mountain home in North Carolina.   I would rather not expose the car to salt or brine dusted roads.

PRE-SALE MAITENANCE:

In preparing the TR4 for sale. I have done the following:

o       Flushed and replaced all of the fluids and filters: Kendall Racing 30wt Oil with ZDDD additive (contains zinc and phosphorous for brass components). coolant (7yr. long life). brake. clutch (silicone fluids). transmission/overdrive (Redline MT90 gear oil).

Note: The hydraulics have been maintained with DOT5 silicone fluid since restoration when all of the hydraulic lines (steel and rubber) were replaced with new ones.

o       New period-correct cloth covered radiator hoses.

o       New generator/water pump fan belt (the premium one vs. the lesser ones available)

o       New Fuel Filter (I use two separate filters)

o       Tune Up: carburetors. spark plugs. distributor cap/rotor. points. condenser

o       New tires and valve stems: Vredestien Sprint Classic 185HR15 (tubeless. made in Holland).   These are the best. high speed tires in the correct size and speed rating available today.   The original tires fitted upon delivery (see Heritage Certificate) were Michelin X. but these are now manufactured by someone else using the Michelin molds.

Note: the XZX tires on the car upon restoration were perfect but old and not to be trusted at the high speeds this car can achieve (100+ mph).

o       New battery in black (period-correct: there are no manufacturer makings on the front case. only the date stamp on top). New absorbent mat in battery tray.

o       New heater valve (the heater was balky) and new driver door window regulator (it would bind)

o       New PVC rubber diaphragm (maintenance item)

o       Complete New Brake and Clutch Systems:

Note: there was slight leak in one of the rear cylinders and both master cylinder shafts showed some weeping of fluid.   These faults could have remained hidden (they were miniscule leaks and the systems worked fine) from a prospective buyer by wiping the fluid off and topping off the masters. In the interest of delivering a perfectly sound car I decided to overhaul the entire brake and clutch systems (cylinders. pads. linings. etc. ).   Note: the rubber brake lines showed external cracks (they had aged). so they were replaced with stainless steel lines (all 4 corners) wrapped in black nylon sheathes.

RESTORATION FACTS:

The car received a full frame-off restoration two years before I bought it. Every piece of rubber and gasket material was replaced. Stainless steel brake lines were added (the hard lines in SS and rubber lines to the wheel hubs) New metal fuel lines New lacquered wood dash New dash board control knobs with new control cables New Moto-Lita steering wheel in wood with brass rivets Every bolt and screw was replaced with new ones (there are no rusty items anywhere). All gauges were removed. “de-dusted”. and calibrated New Wool carpeting throughout in light blue and Triumph rubber mats protect the foot-well carpets New leather seats in Royal blue with white piping New and re-sleeved. original master cylinders (brake/clutch) and clutch slave. Front sway bar New Spax adjustable shocks Frame & Suspension were epoxy primed and Imron painted Transmission was rebuilt (seals. synchronizers) All new clutch components and the flywheel was re-surfaced Overdrive was rebuilt (seals. clutch. electrics) Engine was rebuilt (acid dip. new cam. crank turned and balanced. mild overbore with new Hepolite liners and oversized pistons with new rings. new timing gear. chain. valves. springs. guides. copper head gasket. Carburetors rebuilt. New period-correct radiator shroud Complete Standard Triumph tool set in boot. New 15 inch. 90 spoke Dayton stainless steel. wire wheels (60 spoke originally delivered)

EXTRAS INCLUDED:

The 4 Michelin XZX tires (boxed). which were on the car for shows.   They are virtually new but old as far as date code.   They are included in the sale if you choose to show the car in concourse competition (not recommended for highway travel). Stanpart accessory chrome luggage rack Stanpart full tonneau cover in blue (matches the leather seat color) Approximately $2. 00 spare parts: maintenance. replacement. and accessory spares (new and NOS) Complete. new convertible top and assembly (wrapped in cellophane) with boot cover - if you choose to configure the car as a pure convertible without the Surrey Top. ENHANCEMENTS:

Badge Bar with an original (not a reproduction) British Sports Car Club badge. The other badge in the photos. a Brooklands reproduction. is not included. Stromberg decals on carburetor air cleaners. Battery on/off switch with original tag Triumph key fob Wood Triumph shift knob: an accessory. which looks right Seat belts were added (period-correct lap belts). It was legal for me to use the car without them under pre 1967 safety regulations. but the new owner (and likely the wife) may feel more secure with them in place. Radio: Classic look in black with up-to-date electronics.   It includes CD slot and AUX port (classic face flips down to access the modern components). Small. powerful stereo speakers were installed and are tucked away high and unseen in the driver/passenger foot wells (concourse judges are not likely to see them).   Note: these automobiles were delivered with a single speaker behind the center stack. Dual Exhaust:  the entire exhaust system has been ceramic coated (beginning with the exhaust header. down pipe. mid pipes. mufflers. and finishing at the stainless. 12 inch tips)

Note: The system has separate mufflers and pipes. not a simple split dual system off of a central muffler.

IMPRESSIONS:

The car performs nicely at interstate speeds on overdrive and surpasses 90 mph with ease (overdrive off/on) for passing slower traffic. Beautiful - the lines of the Michelotti designed body. the complimentary blue colors of the exterior/interior. and the curved shape of Surrey Top lend themselves to eye catching beauty.   The car sounds magnificent - there are nice mechanical sounds from the engine and transmission when shifting and the exhaust note is lively yet not obtrusive.   It can be made to burble when downshifting. The car was little used; at times idle for months (under cover in my garage). so a total refresh was done.   It is perfect to enjoy immediately without hidden repair issues coming up. This car is an investment. which beats the equity markets. and is about equal to real estate in appreciation.   Although. it is much more fun to own and there is no “bubble” downside.

DISCLAIMER:

There are three imperfections in the paint (shown in photos): top of RR fender and side LR fender (pinpoint rust appeared approximately 10 years ago). and the back of RR fender has paint imperfection.   The restoration shop believes this was from poor preparation of the underlayment in these areas.

Note: I was quoted $1k per panel this past week by a professional restoration shop in St. Petersburg. Florida to repair and blend paint along the sides.   The owner advised me to leave it alone since this has taken many years to appear.    As the buyer may want to show the car in competition. I have adjusted the reserve price down by $3k to more than cover the cost.

Update (question/answer):

Dear schwaco.
Good morning. br>Would you accept $20. 00 for your TR4.
If yes. I am interested in purchasing. My wife. parents live in Melbourne and could easily pick the car up until I can get down to bring the car home to NY.
Please let me know
Sincerely
dalmat22

Hello dalmat22.

$20k is the amount to open the aucton; the car is not listed as a "buy it now" item. To better understand the market. please consider looking over the prices antique British automobiles are selling for in the "auction houses".   For example look at the results of the Amelia Island auction this past weekend:. a run-of the-mill 1967 MGB ( http://www. goodingco. com/vehicle/1967-mgb/) sold for $37. 00 and a nice 1967 Healy BJ8 (http://www. goodingco. com/vehicle/1967-austin-healey-3000-mk-iii-bj8-4/) sold for a whopping $89. 00.   Note: I do not expect the same results from a 10 day online eBay auction as a same-day. live auction where emotion and immediate bidding competition carries the day.

If I had had the foresight to drive my TR4A a couple of hours to Jacksonville for that auction. I expect my TR4A would have sold midway between these two examples.   Furthermore. one-day auction cars may look good in brochures. but it is unknown if those cars are truly as roadworthy as mine is.   Additionally. my car comes with many. valuable spare parts. which can be used to keep the car in service. litterally. forever. or sold for a handsome profit.   My car is further distinguished as a rare Surrey Top model (well before Porsche or any other manufacturer thought to offer similar Targa-type options).

As is. I missed the Florida auctions this year because I had not completed the "refresh" on my car in time for those events - my fault in letting the car sit too long and then going overboard in keeping the car mechanically perfect to my standards.   I have decided to list on eBay rather wait until next March for the Amelia. West Palm. or the Kissimmee auctions.

Thank you.

Joaquin

Update (question/answer):

Dear Schwaco.

Is there a hard panel for the Surrey top. or just the soft one? Is the Surrey an original one from Triumph. or after market?

Thanks. 1ecrumpetcollector

            Hello 1ecrumpetcollector

The Surrey Top cover is a removable soft top panel in white. which can be stored while underway.   There is no hard panel in aluminum or fiberglass.

The Surrey Top is a Triumph original item with the last. new old stock glass available anywhere 13 years ago (only plexiglas or used glass. likely scratched after many years of    use by multiple owners.   It can be removed if you want tosell it for $3-$5k and use the full. convertible. fold down top. which is also included in the sale.

            Regards. Schwaco
