1966 Land-Rover Safari Station Wagon

Incomparable is the only word that begins to describe this machine.

Dare Britannia. Ltd. is honored to present this 1966 five-door. ten-passenger Land Rover DeLuxe Safari Station Wagon as our most recent classic. It is fitted with the four-cylinder petrol engine and is absolutely rare in that the original factory fit and specification have been retained throughout. To put a finer point on it: this vehicle carries all its original. factory-supplied running gear. not to mention its peripheral  and ancillary equipment. This is a one-owner vehicle since new and was configured for left-hand-drive at the factory in Solihull. England. The four-speed manual gear box and two-speed transfer case are also the factory original items. Driven almost exclusively in non-rust-belt states (Colorado. New Mexico. etc. ) this machine has accumulated fewer than 900 miles per year its entire life! The odometer shows 40. 60 original. credible  miles since new.

A total professional exterior respray ( with 3 coats DuPont single-stage Chroma base. acrylic eurethane ) and complete interior retrim. with FACTORY ORIGINAL “Elephant hide” material. were carried out in 2012 and both were completed within the most recent one hundred miles. All freshly-upholstered  seats. door trim panels and temple pads have been retrimmed to better-than-new condition.  Mint. original factory headliners. All the original factory-specification floor mats remain. While still quite presentable. the driver's side front mat shows  some wear after nearly 50 years of ownership so we are offering with the vehicle another  new. factory original. (“no-longer-available”) Genuine Land-Rover floor mat for the driver's side.   All the original brake. clutch and accelerator pedal pads and gearshift lever knob remain unchanged and witness the originality and accuracy of the mileage. All brake and clutch hydraulics are Genuine Land-Rover or original equipment. Genuine Girling. All the correct and original factory LUCAS electrical equipment remains in place as received from the factory when new. and includes all lamps and  switches. the generator. wiper motors. the wiring. the starter motor. the distributor. and the charging system all remain in place. and all are in fine operating condition.  This time-warp machine still has both original. factory-fitted LUCAS sealed-beam headlamps! The original SMITHS factory heater and defroster system remains in place and functions correctly. The original factory SOLEX  B 40 PAI0/6 carburetter remains fitted and operates exactly as it should.  Original factory AC fuel pump.  All the foregoing are in exquisite. proper and correct operating condition.  The exhaust system is Genuine Land-Rover from front to back.  has recently been fitted and is in good. sound condition throughout.   All road springs. check straps and shock absorbers are Genuine Rover and were fitted just a few years ago…the suspension functions marvelously and operates precisely as intended. This is a comfortable-riding and superlative handling machine in every respect.

The fuel tank has just been restored by one of America's premiere radiator. fuel tank and heater core fabricators and restoration professionals. David Krauss. Why did we not fit a new tank? Because the new tanks currently available are not close in quality or weight to the original factory item. which remains on the vehicle today.  In over twenty-five years of restoring the foregoing through this facility. NEVER has a single piece of David's work has been returned under warranty…. nor have we had word of so much as the first flaw. fault or failure. Even our multi-hundred-thousand-dollar restorations are fitted with David-Krauss-restored components. rather than new.

 This is one of two of the finest North-American specification Long wheelbase. 5-door  Safari Station Wagons we have had the privilege to offer in more than 44 years. The other one was sold approximately 20 years ago.  There is absolutely NO rust on this vehicle except for the kind and amount of surface corrosion seen on never-sold showroom vehicles. No welding torch has been near this vehicle…. ever.  Even the door bottom frames are absolutely mint…. as are the foot wells. the chassis. the firewall…. everything!

 We are showing images of this Land-Rover's formerly-fitted license plates. One of them is from Indiana. but by the time of its licensing there the vehicle was barely being driven…. and it was actually garaged in Kentucky. as it was its entire life.

Four superlative. virtually new DUNLOP RADIAL ROVER LT 235/85R16. 10-ply tires. The spare has barely touched pavement. The bonnet-mounted spare tire mount has the factory locking pillar to prevent theft. The original. period-correct. dealer-fitted WARN M-11 freewheeling hubs have just been restored and function flawlessly. EVERY component underbonnet is correct and original. without exception. Each and every instrument and cockpit component is the correct. factory-fitted item and every one operates flawlessly. This lovely machine has also just been treated to a new/old stock original. “no longer available”  Land-Rover-badged. dual gauge. or safety gauge. which shows both oil pressure and engine coolant temperature simultaneously. All new weatherstripping on all five doors has been professionally fitted within one hundred miles.  All ten doors  hinges have been freshly rebuilt (with a fifty-piece kit) and all are properly adjusted. All new window channel has been professionally fitted within the year.   All doors and latches function flawlessly and all locks operate  as intended. A full set of keys is supplied with the vehicle. All work has been carried out  by the journeyman professional team at Dare Britannia. Ltd. . with aggregate and exclusive vintage Land-Rover experience of  more than 60 years.

This machine accelerates. brakes. steers.  corners and handles as well as or better than the day it was new. Sold fully tuned and serviced complete with a 12-month limited warranty by North America's premiere Land-Rover restoration facility. Dare Britannia. Ltd. . of Olympia. Washington.

A similar Land-Rover sold at auction about 3 years ago for more than $160. 00. 00 and it wasn't upholstered in factory Elephant Hide.  We are unaware of a more authentic. original or correct Land-Rover available. Anywhere. And we don't foresee being able to offer another in the remote  future. Don't miss this jewel! Its like won't be available again for a very long time.
