1968 DAIMLER “TURNER” V8 250 AUTOMATIC, 2 OWNERS FROM NEW, MOT, TAXED.

                                                          1968 DAIMLER “TURNER” V8 250 AUTOMATIC  2 OWNERS FROM  NEW. EXCELLENT CONDITION.

This is a lovely example of a Daimler V8 250 with the “Turner” designed 2500cc V8 engine first seen in the Daimler “Dart”. and later used to build a Daimler version of the famous Mk2 Jaguar.   The car was first registered on 29 July 1968 to its first owner. Dr  David Turner of  Oxford- maybe a relative ? ) and has had only one owner since. also near  Oxford.  The  recorded mileage is 05688 on the speedo . indicating total mileage since new of 105. 88.

It is finished in the original black with cherry red leather seats and trim. all of which are in excellent condition with lovely “patina”. The walnut dashboard and woodwork are all in good condition. as are all the interior fittings (see photographs). The only non-original fittings are the inertia seat belts (front  & rear) and the radio/cassette player. External chrome is in very good condition. except for part of the front bumper. which could easily be re-chromed as the chrome has been eroded over time in one or two places; however the metal below is all good. Structurally she is excellent with original floor pans and inner/outer sills. boot floor and outriggers. The door bottoms are also very good. unusually rust free and have not been welded or plated.

Mechanically. she is as good as she looks with a truly excellent engine. which starts first time using the manual choke control of the SU twin carbs. Despite being 46 years old. this original engine literally “purrs” along and emits no smoke  when warm. The 3 speed Borg Warner automatic box is a perfect match for this car and she is a delight to drive. Recent mechanical work includes new Lucas heavy duty battery. new water pump. brake master cylinder and brake overhaul (nb handbrake also very good which was often a weak point). Under the bonnet she would benefit from light restoration and cleaning/detailing  of the alluminium engine and fittings. which could easily be brought to “showroom” condition with a little tlc.

All electrics are in working order and the alternator/fan belt /battery have been replaced recently (note alternator fitted as standard when new). together with a new water pump. Radiator and hoses are all in good condition and there are no leaks from the engine. The tyres and exhaust are all in good condition. although a new spare tyre will be required at some stage as the current one is the wrong size for the car (original spare wheel size is correct however). Cross ply tyres are fitted which means the steering is not as heavy as with radials (please note the car did not have the power steering option when new).

The car has recently received some restoration in the form of re-sprayed sides (below chrome strip) and interior of the boot. The doors and side panels were partly off- colour  and  had some chips and scratches but NO RUST. Close inspection will show that all the door bottoms are original and sound (unusual in these cars). as are the sils and wheel arches. The interior of the boot was also resprayed at the same time(see picture) as the paint was chipped and off colour. but not rusty and all original metalwork. The picture shows the boot without carpet and spare wheel for inspection (all will be reinstated). This work was done by one of the best body shops in Bristol. and is an excellent job.

Although this car is not in totally  “concourse” condition. it is in very good all round and could easily be brought up to a much higher  standard and meanwhile  is a very “useable” classic.   Having the same bodyshell as the Mk 2 Jaguar (with which it is often confused by the untrained eye). it offers a lower cost alternative for classic motoring to the equally handsome jaguar Mk2. and a more relaxed driving style.  The Daimler  comes with its original owners handbook and tools. current V5.  MOT until end of June 2014 . nd is taxed until end of May 2014. Being of 1968 registration date . road tax is free of course. which is an important consideration. Average fuel consumption is around 20 (25 mpg on a run). and additive is recommended in warm weather .

The 2. 5 V8 was the first Jaguar designed car to have the Daimler badge. The Daimler V8 engine was more compact and therefore lighter than the six-cylinder XK engine used in the Jaguar Mark 2. and weighed approximately 50 kg ("1 cwt") less. Spring and damper settings were revised accordingly to suit the altered weight distribution. [3] The Daimler's stance on the road was noticeably different from a Mark 2.

Three years after its launch. a Daimler 2½-litre saloon with automatic transmission tested by the Britain's Autocar magazine in May 1966 had a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 13. 6 seconds. An overall fuel consumption of 19. 0 miles per imperial gallon (14. 9 L/100 km; 15. 8 mpg-US) was achieved. The test car was priced in the UK at £1. 47. Produced from October 1967 – 1969 it was a slight face-lift and re-labelling of the 2. 5 V8 saloon and differed in relatively small details: "slimline" bumpers and over-riders (shared with the Jaguar 240/340 relabelled at the same time). negative-earth electrical system. an alternator (instead of a dynamo) and twin air cleaners. one for each carburettor. Other new features included padding over the instrument panel. padded door cappings and ventilated leather upholstery. reclinable split-bench front seats and a heated rear window.
