Seller's notes: This Crayford Cortina MK1 is sold AS IS…. What do I mean? AS IS? Well its 50 years old car with the appropriate age related Patina & Idiosyncrasies of any car from its day. It's not been fully tested for faults, scratches, marks or function and there is obvious wear & tear that would be expected on any 50 year old classic cabriolet. It is therefore the responsibility of the buyer to satisfy themselves that this meets their own requirements before the Auction closes. Its strongly advised that an inspection is made prior to the Auctions close. Its basically a solid classic 1960’s survivor, one that with the right amount of fine tuning, loving, care & any necessary tidying could some day produce a potential future show winner.

The all new Cortina Mk1 replaced the 315 Classic in October 1962 and was at first only available as a two door saloon. the ideal form for any Crayford conversion. its long transatlantic lines. and thin rear pillars were ideal for a roof chop.

Crayford Engineering had yet to be formed when the Cortina Mk 1 was launched and all Crayford Engineering's early efforts went into the early Mini. so it was not until the 10th of January 1964 that AutoCar announced the new Crayford Cortina Mk 1 to the public.

The Mk 1 Crayford Cortina was launched at the following weeks Racing Car Show at Olympia. London on the 22nd January 1964. A big scoop for Crayford was the early order of thirty Mk 1 Crayford's for the Bermuda Islands; these were destined for use as hire cars and Taxis. since some were completed with fare meters on the dashboard.

In the UK Phillips Motors. operating from the Convertible Car Centre. Chalk Farm. Regents Park. London had the sole franchise to sell the Mk 1 Crayford which was built on the DeLuxe. Super. GT & base fleet cars - A GT version cost £1. 24 50 years ago!

The story of the Ford Cortina is more than just a tale about a best-selling motor car. It's a story of an exciting “classic” still enjoyed today over 50 years on. The Cortina was the best-selling car of its class in the early sixties. selling over ONE million cars. There was a Cortina model for everybody starting with the basic fleet car right through to the GT & Lotus or even the ultra-rare ragtop Cruiser…. The Crayford Cortina famously named after an Italian village Cortina d' Ampezzo .

There is knowledge of just 17 Crayford Cortina Mk 1's surviving today from less than 50 ever built. All have been seen and confirmed as authentic. whilst none of the thirty Bermuda cars have survived. The Bermuda Crayfords lived in a very humid climate surrounded by sea & salt and had hard working lives as hire cars & taxis so it's no surprise that none survive. That leaves just 17 Mk1 Crayford Cortina's MK1's and KGN 455D is one of the finest of these last survivors….

KGN 455D is actually registered in Ireland as ZV52758. It was rediscovered in Limerick after the last owners had retired to Ireland in 2006 following decades in London. They decided to bring their beloved Cortina Cabriolet into retirement with them and it has hardly been used in the last 8 years. This 1500 Super GT Cabriolet was garaged and obviously cared for throughout its life. and it really shows. It's an absolute credit to its previous owners.

KGN 455D is a 1966 1500 Super GT Crayford Convertible that is ready to go. It's not a Concours d'Elegance condition vehicle. more like a great every day runner that's waiting to have topless fun. There's a huge history file with many decades of MOT's & other documentation to verify its authenticity & low mileage. The Chassis & Engine numbers all match and the overall condition well described by the images. Although viewing is the only way to confirm all this in advance.

A MK1 2 Door 1500 Cortina in Super. GT or Lotus trim are understandably hard to find these days BUT try to think about the last Crayford Cortina MK1 Convertible you saw for sale. This is that rare opportunity and I'd suggest you could be very many years looking for another to come on the market!

Some would strip this car back to its individual components and totally rebuild it better than original but that would be a mistake as it's simply not necessary as she starts first time and is ready to drive away. Please understand that this very pretty Crayford Cortina is sold AS IS…. What do I mean? AS IS? Well its 50 years old car with the Patina & Idiosyncrasies of its day. A real classic 60's survivor. that with the right amount of fine tuning. loving. caring & tidying. this would one day produce a potential future show winner.

Good Luck with the Auction as it's on here to be SOLD to a genuine bidder………. please note that when you bid you are entering into a contract to purchase and not to haggle afterwards so previous viewing is strongly recommended - although any questions will be answered via eBay prior to the end of the auction.

A £500 PayPal deposit is required within 24 hours of the Auction close or the car will be offered to the next highest bidder as collection must be made within 7 days.
