MG TC 1949

Rare 'EXU' Export Model

One of only 493 ‘export model' MG TCs built and still retaining most of the original ‘export' items (note the speedometer is in kilometers/hr. very possibly indicating original sale in France) such as a special rear bumper with MG octagon in the center. horns located under the bonnet. lighter on dash. turn signals with lights on either side of the fuel tank and flasher switch on the dash (most EXU cars have long shed most or all of these items).

Car is in excellent show condition. having just been restored and only covering 25. 00 kilometers since new. Being that the body is finished in black. ANY waves or signs of bodywork would be visible. Instead. it's beautifully straight and with great depth in the paint.  Chassis appears to be perfect. wood floors are new. everything (including doors) fits very well and there are no signs of wood damage. rot. accident repair. etc.

We were told that this car was owned by an attorney in Oklahoma for decades and was restored three times over the years.  As it is now. the leather is new and immaculate. dash/switches/gauges are all excellent (and all in working condition including the matching optional water temperature gauge). wiring appears to be fairly new and horns. wipers. turn signals. EVERYTHING works properly.

Engine starts instantly. runs flawlessly. no smoke at all. 60 psi oil pressure when hot. quiet valves. no oil leaks. revs quickly and smoothly. no clutch slippage or shudder. gearbox is excellent (does not pop out of gear. good synchromesh action. quiet operation). steering is quite good by TC standards and helped by the Tompkins kit.  Brakes were just done and the car has a new set of five Dayton 19” wire wheels with new ‘made in England' Dunlop 450-19 tires.

Top. side curtains and tonneau are new. New seat belts are installed and the last owner installed a new wood steering wheel to replace the cracked original wheel (which if wanted. is widely available brand new).

When engine was overhauled. was sleeved to standard bore. new pistons. new stainless steel valves. new camshaft (one reason the engine is so lively…a lot of TC owners neglect to replace this essential part and wind up with a smooth running but gutless TC). and while most TCs seem to be struggling at 50-60 mph. this car can cruise happily at 65-70 mph.

Stainless steel exhaust still has some of the part number stickers on it. is quiet and seems properly mounted to the chassis.  Ride is FAR better than most and my first driving impression was ‘this car feels more like a TD or TF (not sure if this is an accolade for a TC or an insult).  No rattles. not excessively bouncy. and with a surprisingly ‘sure' feel (we have sold maybe 50 TCs over the years and can never recall a better running or driving example).

Chrome is excellent. car has its ORIGINAL ‘King of the Road' head and side lights (NOT cheap reproductions). the rare (and expensive) right side mirror. the original fast idle control on the dash works (a rarity amongst TCs and a nice touch). and YES. it has ‘matching numbers. '

If you don't know the charms of an MG TC. beyond the sweeping fenders. skinny 19” wheels. cut down doors. folding windshield. and classic dash/gauge arrangement… What you get is essentially a pre war MG in esthetics BUT with the ease of maintaining and driving a post war car.  With hydraulic brakes. synchromesh transmission. press fit (as opposed to poured) bearings. and most any part you would ever need is available from Moss Motors or many other sources.  Owning a TC is easy unlike most cars of the 1930s.

Yes. yes. yes……you can have us fit a stereo/CD to keep you company. a heater to ward off a chill in cold weather. and if you add a modern electronic ignition module and. perhaps. a back up solid state fuel pump. you can achieve a degree of reliability far beyond that which was offered when new.

Buy a classic car sight unseen from someone a long way away?  This car does not seem to hold any secrets…. we have nearly 200 transactions logged on eBay with a 100% positive rating and sincerely do our best to 1st. convey all of the history we have received from past owners and past inspection reports. and 2nd. do our best to test. examine. and represent the car to a distant buyer.  We have driven this car. got it up proper operation temperature to check oil pressure and lack of smoke. driven it up to over 70 mpg on the highway. crawled underneath. gone over the body with a kitchen magnet. looked under the dash. what else can we do?  It is A REALLY EXCELLENT MG TC with most of the rare ‘EXU' additions.

In our service and restoration shop. we can do any additional preparation work a buyer may wish to have done. we can store the car ‘till Spring. arrange transportation anywhere in the US or the world. and give advice. make recommendations and suggestions.
