1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spider Turbo
One of the finest 1st generation examples we've seen! You are looking at a fully restored 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Turbo with the 150hp engine (RPO690) in Roman Red (RPO923) over red vinyl (RPO779) with a Ermine white top (RPO936).
245087 appears to be a Factory General Motors Show Car built second week of April 1962 for the debut of the Corvair Spyder Option and the convertible model. This particular car may have been on display at the GREENBRIER HOTEL in White Sulphur Springs. West Virginia. The Greenbrier was the sight of the spring 1962 General Motors senior management meeting. This car gave the executives the opportunity to see and drive the new Corvair Spyder! Convertible production had begun by the second week of March 1962; the Spyder was introduced in March and Spyder production targeted for April 1st. With a Fisher Body tag showing the second week of April (4B). this vehicle is definitely one of the earliest Spyders.
This car appears to have been a recipient of additional detail and prep work during construction that included leaded seams. metal finished door jambs and paint as perfect as they could make it. It’s believed that it went straight to Chevy Engineering in Warren (as opposed to it being a Styling car) where the white stripe was added. the red may have possibly been repainted to even greater perfection and the engine tweaked or even torn down and blueprinted. Those relatively simple changes would have justified the CEC work order number on the engine block. Then the car would have been put in company service as a VIP or an auto show car. though no show photos have surfaced of a production appearing Spyder convertible with a white stripe.
Upon the end of the meeting at the Greenbrier Hotel. this car was sold to the assistant manager of the hotel (Mr. Wesley Keenan-since passed away). After several years of ownership. Mr. Keenan sold it to Bob Whiting whom also worked at the Greenbrier Hotel. Mr. Whiting was in charge of the horses and stables. He had his eyes on the car since it was being stored at the barn in the stables daily. He purchased the car from Keenan and kept it until the 80's when he moved on to a new Cadillac. We have a statement from the dealership that took the trade from Mr. Keenan. This statement indicates that he thoroughly believes the vehicle was a display vehicle at the Greenbriar. This car features a white racing stripe down the center. custom finished bodywork. wood steering wheel. Kelsey Hayes knock off wire wheels with wide white walls. 150hp turbo charged air-cooled flat 6-cylinder engine. 4-speed transmission. and a 3. 55 positraction transaxle.
Only 2. 75 Monza Spyder Convertibles were built in 1962 out the 216. 00 Corvair Monzas produced that year! This one also sports Optional Knock-off wire wheels all around and as a spare. Extra door panel. original steering wheel. extra serpentine belt. hat. books and keys all included. Also. includes numerous memorabilia. photo albums of restoration and car shows. awards etc. Plenty of CORSA articles and original marketing materials included. Starts well and drives wonderfully. Tires have plenty of life. The interior is fantastic with well-done trimmings. seats and carpets. Shifting is a cinch. Top is easy to put up and take down with the red toneau cover included. A must see up close to appreciate the paint quality. decals. stripes. restoration under hood and trunk etc.
