Considered to be Ferrari's first attempt at a luxury gentleman's touring coupe. and considered the lesser-known of the front-engine 2+2 coupes. the Ferrari 400 and 412 began production in 1976. First introduced in 1976. the Ferrari 400i lasted until 1985. A total of 884 of the Ferrari 400i automatics were produced. of which there were only 341 made in 1981. The 400 prototype was introduced in 1972. and a revised version appeared at Paris in 1976.

Originally called the 400 GT. its V12 displaced 4. 8-liters. But the most important mechanical change was the gearbox: This was the first Ferrari available with a factory-installed automatic transmission. Ferrari adapted General Motors' state-of-the-art three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic for use with the V12 and created the 400 Automatic. It was a very popular move for owners.

Externally. the five-speed-manual 400 GT and the 400 Automatic were nearly identical to the 365. save taillights reduced in number from six to four. and the addition of a small front spoiler. The interior. however. was substantially revised. with new seats and more leather trim. making it much more luxurious.

The 400 would soldier on into the mid 1980s. The main revision came in late 1979 with introduction of fuel injection. The 400i (for injection) was offered with both the five-speed and automatic. Fuel injection spread to the rest of the Ferrari lineup within a year.

At first. the chisel-edged Pininfarina shape was showcased as the 365 GT4 2+2. with a four-cam 4. 4-litre V12 and five-speed manual gearbox only. A short lived variant. the 365 was a 150 mph 4-seater that was replaced in 1976 by the 400GT. In 1979 the 400i came with Bosch injection to enhance smoothness though it robbed the V12 of 30 bhp. The Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection replaced the carburetors on the 400. The emissions were much improved. but the power was down substantially. The 412 replaced the 400i in 1985. Unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show. it was at the time. the only Ferrari imported into the U. S. by the factory.

Dubbed as the "gentleman's" Ferrari. the 400i engine based on the Daytona. was a 4. 8 L (4823 cc) V12 that was capable of producing 340 hp. It carried the traditional GT car layout with rear drive wheels and body styling by Pininfarina.

Hard to believe that this car is 32 years old !!!

This 400i is all original with I. D. numbers matching and very low **original** mileage. This custom Ferrari is truly a very rare and unique specimen – it turns heads everywhere it goes. The exterior finish is factory original Gregio (Gray). not repainted. with Tan leather bucket seats. along with optional factory color coded inserts in dark chocolate brown. The auto industry had not yet adopted the current 17 character VIN code system. and it is VIN #F101CL35365.

This 32 year old classic beauty has just under 14. 00 original miles. It is not a clone nor reproduction.  I do drive the car regularly on the weekends if the weather is perfect. and on May 5. 2013 there were just 13. 33 miles on the car. Due to the 2 + 2 seating. it is perfect for taking the small kids along for the ride. The enemy of a Ferrari is letting them just sit. Like most thoroughbreds. they want regular exercise to keep their health. and do not like to sit still.

The big F101 V12 four (4) cam fuel injected engine runs smoothly with the classic Ferrari exhaust rumble that cries of caged power just waiting to be released. It fires up immediately and runs well. without noticeable leaks. There are no backfires. knocks or pings. The engine responds properly without smoking or showing any other serious problems. An electronic MSD ignition has been installed to improve starting performance of this 12 cylinder beauty. The automatic transmission shifts very smoothly – perfect for city driving. Pennsylvania has one of the most rigorous mechanical and emissions inspections in the USA. and this car sports current and valid stickers for both. It expires at the end of this month.

Loaded with extras and many custom items. the leather interior is supple and smooth. and in my opinion. is not dried out. The electrical system. brakes. suspension. engine. transmission and drivetrain all operate properly. as one should expect with a well-maintained. very low mileage Ferrari.  All hoses. seals. latches. buttons etc are in excellent working condition. except the glove box latch which feels a bit loose. Rubber and trim are in average condition and do exhibit some wear. but are functional without leaks.

The car has obviously been exceptionally well maintained. having a new battery. new battery terminal cables. and overhauled alternators within the past 12 months. I have owned this car since approximately 2001 and have all service records since then. though they are in different boxes and I'm not sure I can gather them all together by the time of sale completion. At this time. records are not included with the sale though I will try to have them gathered together.

The Title is free and clear of any Lien. Flood. Recondition or Salvage Claim. and I have it in hand. To the best of my knowledge. this Ferrari has never been involved in any accident.

There is a black convertible power top. with tan interior headliner that works smoothly. Some people have told me that Ferrari did make an *exceedingly rare* factory cabriolet (convertible) in this model. Others have told me that all the convertibles are custom. I don't know. since I am not a dealer or Ferrari representative. I believe that the car is definitely more valuable as a convertible rather than the more commonly found coupe. even if it was modified after production. It surely is a whole lot more fun!

The convertible top looks 100% factory and if custom. was very professionally done. There are no rips or cracks in it. and the rear window is clear. not cloudy. though a bit yellowed from age. A slight problem is that the tops of the windows don't go under the top unless the doors are closed with the windows down a bit. Closing the doors and then raising the windows and they will seat properly. I am told that this is an easy fix. but being disabled. I cannot do the work anymore. When the top is retracted down. it fits neatly into a well behind the rear seats and a cover snaps into place for amazing looks and protection. The snaps for the cover have been recently reinforced. and the whole top was removed. then re-stretched. and fits tightly.

The many luxury items in this Ferrari include: Power windows. dual exterior side view mirrors with power driver's side. dual exhaust system. AC with dual level cooling / heating. factory Ferrari wheels. and premium radials. power hood. trunk. and fuel door releases. The Pioneer AM/FM stereo w/ CD was installed new in 2001 and is removable. though the power antenna no longer works. There are custom burl wood inserts for the gauge cluster. dash defroster vents. glove box door. console. and upper door panels. All wood is in exceptional condition. except along the defroster vents where some cracking has occurred over time. The speedometer with trip odometer is in MPH. The original clock still works. though the reset stem does not work. A new clock. still in its opened original box. is included in this sale.

To my knowledge. the only known defects are that the clock reset stem does not work. the power antenna does not work. the knob on the windshield wiper stem comes off. there is what looks like a buffer burn of the paint on the trunk lid. and a chip in the right corner of the front bumper. This chip was on the car when I purchased it. and also was repaired prior to my ownership. The burn in the trunk lid paint was also already on the car when I bought it. Last. but not least. we took the car to a local car cruise this past fall. While we were admiring the other cars. someone must have sat down on the front end. leaving a minor dent in the nose. This is not accident damage. and is visible in the high definition photos at http://www. 400i. net . There are also several very minor paint chips on the front. to be expected in a vehicle that is driven regularly.

While most other V12 Ferrari's are selling in the $45. 00+ range. the 400i's have yet to catch up. making this an incredible investment opportunity.
