The Jaguar E-Type is Legend. It needs no introduction and the
motive power. design and accolades heaped upon it are warranted and
well known. The Series I was introduced. initially for export only. br/>in March 1961 with the domestic market launch coming four months
later in July. The cars at this time used the triple SU carburetted
3. 8 litre 6-cylinder Jaguar XK6 engine from the XK150S. These cars
are rare and now the most valuable. In October 1964 the 3. 8 litre
engine was increased to 4. 2 litres. As with all motorcars that
underwent progressive design and improvement. the Series II
benefitted from open headlights without glass covers. a wrap-around
rear bumper. re-positioned and larger front indicators and tail
lights below the bumpers. better cooling aided by an enlarged
'mouth' and twin electric fans. The engine is easily identified
visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a more
industrial 'ribbed' appearance. The interior and dashboard were
also redesigned. with rocker switches that met US health and safety
regulations being substituted for toggle switches. New seats were
fitted. which purists claim lacked the style of the originals but
were certainly more comfortable.
The vendor purchased this righthand drive 1969 Jaguar E-Type
Series II Roadster in 1989. shortly after the car had been
restored. During his twenty five years of ownership he has had the
car overhauled at a cost of over £35. 00. starting in 1990 when he
had the car repainted in his choice of colour; dark blue. followed
by the fitting of a new wiring loom and new exhaust manifolds in
1995. A complete re-trim in beige was carried out in 2000 and in
2006 the next lot of works was undertaken including new wheels. new
petrol tank and a rebuilt radiator with two new fans and new hoses.
Two years later the rear subframe was removed and completely
overhauled fitting new crown wheel and pinion. new hubs. new
driveshaft universal joints. the rear brakes were replaced with new
parts and when the subframe was refitted it was all with new mounts
and bushes. At the same time in 2008 the alternator was overhauled
and the car was fitted with a new brake master cylinder and clutch
slave cylinder. The following year saw the engine and gearbox
rebuilt. the engine re-bored and relined. new crankshaft. the
flywheel lightened. new pistons and con rods. new timing chain and
a replacement cylinder head with large valves fitted; at the same
time the carburettors were overhauled and the starter motor and
steering rack rebuilt. Five new tyres were fitted in 2010. In 2011
the front suspension and brakes were overhauled which included
replacing the front lower ball joints. fitting new stub axle shafts
and hubs and fitting reconditioned front brake callipers. also at
this time a new fuel pump was fitted. Last year during the minor
service the battery was replaced. This 1969 Jaguar E-Type Series II
Roadster is supplied with a V5C registration document. an MoT test
certificate which expires 28th April 2014 and the history file
which contains old MoT's and invoices going back to 1972
demonstrating that the car has been properly looked after and
maintained and in the current ownership has only covered 11. 00
miles since 1989; all of which points to a sound and cherished
example of what Enzo Ferrari called. 'the most beautiful car in the
world'.
