The first XJ was launched in 1968; a designation which has been
used for successive Jaguar flagship models ever since and was also
the last Jaguar saloon to have had the input of Sir William Lyons. br/>the company's founder. The XJ6. using 2. 8 litre and 4. 2 litre
straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine. br/>replaced most of Jaguar's saloons which. in the 1960s. had expanded
to four separate ranges. Power-assisted steering and leather
upholstery were standard on the 2. 8L De Luxe and 4. 2L models. An
unusual feature. inherited from the Jaguar Mk. X and S-Type. was
the provision of twin fuel tanks positioned on each side of the
boot and filled using two separately lockable filler caps.

Owned for approximately four years by the current vendor but
with a service history dating back to its build date. this short
wheelbase model is unusual in that its 4. 2 litre motor sends power
through a four-speed manual/overdrive gearbox. fitted from new. It
has been restored at some point with new paintwork showing. a
rebuilt back axle and suspension. a new headlining. new bushes all
round. new brake discs all round and fully re-built engine and S. U.
carburettors. Serviced again within the last two months and
carrying an MoT test certificate valid until the end of 2014. this
stylish example of Sir William Lyons' last car is reasonably priced
and extremely reliable.
