The P5 appeared in September 1958. badged as the '3 litre' and
powered by a 2999cc engine. This straight-six engine used an
overhead inlet valve and side exhaust valve; an unusual arrangement
inherited from the Rover P4. An automatic transmission. overdrive
on the manual. and power steering were optional with overdrive
becoming standard from May 1960. The Mk. II version of the P5 was
introduced in 1962. It featured more power from the same three
litre engine and an improved suspension. while dropping the glass
wind deflectors from the top of the window openings. The most
notable addition to the range was the option of the coupé body
style launched in Autumn 1962. Unlike most coupés. which tend to be
two door versions of four door saloons. this retained the four
doors and was of the same width and length as the saloon. but
featured a roofline lowered by two and a half inches along with
thinner B-pillars. The Mk. III model was presented at the London
Motor Show in October 1965. described at the time as "even more
luxuriously trimmed". The Mk. III used the same engine as its
predecessor. although it now produced 134bhp. Externally it could
be distinguished by the full-length trim strip along the body;
internally it replaced the rear bench seat with two individually
moulded rear seats. making it more comfortable to ride in for four
occupants. A total of 3919 Mk. III saloons and 2501 coupés had been
sold by the time production ended in 1967.

First registered on 2nd February. 1966 to Mr. R. Lovett of
Alnwick. Northumberland. this delightful manual with overdrive
Mk. III coupé presents in exceptional condition and appears to be
largely original. The Rover was painted a couple of years ago;
purely to freshen her up and not because of any corrosion issues;
photographic evidence is available to confirm this. The leather
trim is in splendid order with the seats having a lovely patina. A
number of previous MoT test certificates are available confirming
little use in recent years. The mileage of 39. 46 appears to be
genuine although this is not warranted. Supplied with a V5
registration document and a full year's MoT test certificate. this
is surely one of the best P5 Mk. III coupés available on the market
today. sumptuously equipped and of very high quality in the truest
Rover tradition.
