                 MGA     Coupe  1600 Mk 1   1960

Original English right hand drive car in original black colour. 55K miles.

It may have been a Police car or used for rallying due to mounting disc. probably for a lamp. on the roof.

Unusually. the original registration mark was JW 179. possibly a personalised one. but was later transferred : I am the 6th owner.

It has a Certificate of Authenticity from BMIHT showing it was built between 12th and 14th Jan 1960 and has matching numbers.

It has an old green/brown log book showing various changes.

The first owner changed the colour to red. but then it was restored in the 1980's by the second owner to a very high standard by Post Vintage Engineers (look at their current website) of Leeds (with invoices for all work). specialists in Aston Martins and included body-off. bare metal resto with new door pillar assemblies and possibly a new rear wing. All other panels believed original. It was returned to its original black.

(Large photo file of resto and whole stack of receipts).

It is testament to the quality of the restoration that it's still in lovely condition.

The second owner eventually sold it to someone who kept it a short time. just long enough to cash in on the personalized number plate. It was then owned for quite a long time by an MG enthusiast. who eventually sold it to a man who ran a company hiring out exotic sports cars in North Wales. but the little MG was not hired much and I bought it in May 2008 from him. I feared abuse by its previous usage. but nothing untoward has transpired.

The interior of the car had new headlining and a new carpet set when it was restored. but. otherwise. it retains that fantastic patina of age with original seat covers. door cards. facia etc. It has a small 10mm piece of door card material missing. and the drivers door pull is cracked (its been like that since I bought it and I have a replacement)

Engine was rebuilt in 2005 (fully receipted). and converted for unleaded. Mileage of 55500 believed to be genuine. all MOT's since 1990 (only 15K miles since restoration). I also have MOT from 1976 (showing 40K miles) and I have tax discs from 1976. 1977 then 1990 onwards. so I believe it was taken off the road in 1976 and not returned till 1990.

I purchased the vehicle in 2008 at 51K miles and have carried out the following:

Fitted high quality rubber/foam/rubber sandwich carpet underlay

Sealed all floorboards to surrounding metalwork on u/side.

Doors stripped. all felt and rubber seals replaced. locks overhauled.

door/body seals replaced with correct red trim.

Relays for lights. fan etc (lighting switches will now last forever)

Headlamp flasher (very useful for modern driving)

Electric fan

Seat belts (fixed)

Modern indicator switch with warning buzzer as well as lamp

K & N air filters (for better filtration and longer engine life)

Spin-on oil filter adaptor

Locking petrol cap. ally gear knob

Extra high level LED brake light (for safety)

Overflow bottle (no more constant topping-up)

Smaller wood-rimmed steering wheel (available at £200 on top of the agreed price. otherwise. original wheel will be refitted)

Conversion to one 12V battery

Stainless exhaust

Interior mirror removed so that nearside wing can be seen.

Halogen headlamps and sidelamps

Boot seal changed to lip seal (no more sponge rubber seal to rot the

   boot surround.

Rebuilt carbs in 2009. with full service kits. new needles.

Ignition upgraded to 1-2-3 electronic in 2010. with new high     performance leads and Sport coil: no more fiddling with points and

   excellent starting.

Recent new front dampers (recon. I'm afraid)

Bumper overriders and hub caps removed and rear reg plate   repositioned. all for a cleaner look: I think the less cluttered look really lets the beauty of the car show through.

(I have every single original part required to go back to standard stored carefully. (except the original air boxes) and the modifications are all very easy to reverse: I will help with this. if required. )

I inspect the underside of the car every year. and clean and rustproof where necessary. I have taken the wing splashplates off twice (once recently) and it is perfect behind. The cill area of both body and chassis is excellent. and I have injected the cills regularly. The chassis has a little surface rust at the rear. The front is pretty oily.

I have maintained this car myself. including regular greasing. and it is in excellent mechanical condition. the engine runs at about 75psi and doesn't drop much. It sounds fine. just as it should.

This car is in lovely condition. although the paintwork has a few areas which are not upto the standard of the rest of the car. There are no dents. Around the disc on the roof is some sort of crazing. only visible really close up. but has been the same since I purchased it. There are a few other areas where the ravages of 25 years have been touched in. but. from just a few paces away. she looks as new.

I have always kept her in a car port: may not be as good as a garage. although some say better.

So. if you want a car which has had the all-important. body-off /bare metal resto by one of the highest quality companies out there (and which has not had a “recent respray” job or is not “just restored”). nbsp; yet which retains the lovely patina of age to its interior. and which has a fully documented history and is just about as honest as any car out there and has subtle mods to make it far more easy to live with than a standard car. this is it.
