I restore old Porsche's and VW's. These are old parts with new starts!

This beautiful 1974 Porsche 911 has had two caring owners and still adorns it's factory applied paint! It has spent years in storage and shows less than 98k miles on the odometer. In it's time. it has had many. many. carefully thought out upgrades to improve the drivability . reliability. and performance of the car.

This  car has spent it's life in Southern Arizona which shows as the car has almost zero corrosion.

Marketing trends are showing a rise in the desirability and collectability of the mid year 911s. this one surely stands out from among the rest. This car is beautiful. It is a driver. It is a sure fire card. which in coming years will predictably be among some of the fastest to grow in value among vintage european cars. The demand and excitement has caught on. people are realizing that these early 911s deliver endless fun and come with freedoms that can not be had with later model cars. This 911 is among a small crowd. specifically early '74 911s. one that was not held back with strict emissions standards when being manufactured(& so they go by for your current renewal in most locals). These are narrow body. short hood cars. without catalytic convertors. These are cars that were proud to be manufactured with colors that excite! Chrome trim to adore. and narrow tires which make them of the most fun cars to drive! This car is a blast to drive around town. it absolutely has the power to be driven by a skilled driver and keep his/her attention. :) It has amazing control at normal. and above normal. freeway speeds. They are truly in contention still with the most powerful. electrically driven cars with their modern stability control. anti-lock brakes. 10" wide tires. 6. 2 Liter 580hp barges that have so many electronics. bells. and whistles. that their lackluster owners will wonder how so much can be passed by the most enthusiastically driven 1970's Porsche owner. The others can and will carry on to above 120+ to prove they are faster. but they were schooled up until that point! Nor would modern carry the excitement and oneness at any speed. This is a car you will love to drive and will reward you with a 'true' experience at reasonable speeds!

Looking at values you will see that the '74 Porsche begins the downhill on values as you look towards the later year 911s. This is absolutely because of the 2. 7 liter engines that these cars were plagued with. Just Google 2. 7 liter 911 problems and you will understand these cars came with a 60k mile engine. boat anchors. Continuing with the watching of values. they begin to rise to a understandable level when in come the 3. 0 Liter cars. But. these cars still do not have the value of the early cars. These cars are wide body. many with giant spoilers. almost none with chrome trim. no stainless targa bar. non exciting colors(enter the 80's). These are cars that were to make numbers as the fastest road cars with the biggest top speeds. It was the thinking of the late '70's and 80's. It was the new car lure that had to come. Cars that did not have the torque. hp(per liter). reliability of the original design. The thermal reactor among other emissions controls were really the downfall. They caused cars to make much less power. rely on modern electronics. fuel injection. de-tuning. and more nasty things(like pumping exhaust into the intake) to get cars to meet 'modern' emissions requirements. These things forced manufactures to make larger engines that ran hotter(ruined reliability). had less horse power. less zing. The fix for these cars was to gear them to be the fastest top speed. and handle. carry. their speed into and through turns by putting ridiculously wide tires. flares. wings. anything to hang off and effectively keep these cars fast on a track. Through doing these things. and now into the modern age of stability control(cars now steering for you when you screw up. LOL) cars have lost their feedback. Cars that had to have a fix to meet federally mandated emissions laws. The fix for this '74 has been taken care of. but for the right reasons. making this a rare breed. Read on to understand the car that we have here. This is no ordinary 1974.

This car has had two meticulous owners.

The original owner lived on a cotton farm in Marana. Southern Arizona. During his care the car had been upgraded with a factory built 1980 3. o Liter engine. This was done in 1980. In 1981 he suffered an illness and parked this car. and many other rare cars in covered storage in hopes that he would be able to drive them again. It was not until mid-2008 that this car was taken out of storage. when I bought the car. Upon getting the 911 I spent the better part of 6 months going through and bringing the car up to it's incredible driver status. It was obvious that the previous owner never 'drove' the factory built engine. The engines electronic control system was not installed. or included with the car. It is something that I sourced online and once installed. the engine came to life! The car was drivable without the system. but not at all with the 911 performance. Looking at the time line. I landed upon an almost zero mile engine. built by the factory! These 3 Liter engines are known to be 250k to 500k mile engines. which is why later 911 SC's have such a following.

 There are several fantastic bonuses that come with this engine in this car;

This car is smog exempt for many states. For states requiring a smog check. this is a December of 1973 build. meaning this car does not require a catalytic converter which rob power and reduce the life of the engines. This engine does not have a cat on it's original 1974 exhaust. This is the exhaust commonly used to backdate a later 3. 0 car to get power and get them to run cool and live. Unfortunately. these owners have to once a year swap back their original exhausts for emissions time. not a fun idea for anyone. In addition to. this car has the vacuum controlled wur which increases fuel ratio upon acceleration. giving the engine instant. useable power at any rpm. This engine is amazingly powerful and makes the most wonderful sounds.   This is a 3. 0 liter that is set up right! Very few 911's are as quick as this one! Other upgrades to the engine include. and are not limited to; Carrera style chain tensioners. original '74 air ducting. turbo valve covers. pop-off valve. K&N air filter. span >  back dated oil return lines. front mounted Trombone oil cooler with stock 3. 0 lines and thermostat (HUGE). stainless steel braid shielded spark plug wires. 1980 SC distributor with magnetically discharged spark capacitive discharge ignition. Each and every upgrade has been done for reliability. power. and a stock 1974 look. with 1974 emissions labeling. for those of you who do need to go through emissions! As of 2009 when I got her back on the road the engine had all new seals installed. with the exception of the oil return tubes. I did not want to break the factory seal on the heads or cam towers. understandably. If the time comes to do seals on the oil returns. Porsche makes a expandable tube for replacement without dropping the motor. The engine does leak a little oil when parked for a long period. There are two oil lines running from the engine to the oil thermostat. located in the rear fender. one of which I replaced and the other is seeping very slowly. Other than that it has the normal drips of any air cooled 911. Throughout my ownership I have driven the car with these small leaks. For example. I drove from Tucson to San Fransisco where I stayed for a week. I drove the car every day. By the time I got back to Tucson the car had leaked/burned less than a half quart of oil. On my recent drive to where the car is now located. Hollywood. it burned absolutely no oil. I am talking about a small amount of drip and want to be clear. This engine is in remarkable shape. When valve adjustment time comes the valves have never needed any adjustment. showing this engine is dialed and healthy!

This transmission is very desirable. It is the cars original 1974 915 unit and is in excellent condition. This transmission is geared for the original 2. 7 Liter engine. so when put up against the super powerful 3. 0 engine this car really sets itself apart from any ordinary 911. The 3. 0 has a very flat torque curve along the rpm range compare to a 2. 7. especially with the non-catalytic exhaust and vacuum Wur! The torque is huge at low rpms and continues on with very high Hp. Driving around town the car allows you to be in total control and is very tame when driven in traffic. If a problem were to arise. span >  your response on the accelerator is instant. no need to waste time on a downshift because the engine makes huge power so low. The transmission is just as special as the engine. brakes. and everything else in making this car an amazing driver! As part of my going through the car I also steam cleaned the transmission. replaced the transmission seals. rebuilt the cv joints. all shifter bushings. coupler. rebuilt the clutch linkage. and installed new transmission and engine mounts. Also. a Porsche factory clutch disc was installed while I had it apart. as well as a new throughout bearing. The transmission shifts and performs  beautifully!

To follow in this cars powerful tradition in upgrades to the power-train. so has the suspension. and in effect the performance in the cars handling.

The front brakes are the very sought after 911'S' aluminum calipers and vented rotors. These are the big brakes that still fit under the early 15" wheels. The brakes are not a bolt on. They require the right equipment to be bolted to. which is where the suspension comes into play. The bolt pattern for the mounting of the calipers relies on having the correct 911'S' struts. When it came time to choose the struts. the best parts were yet again chosen for the role… KONI! This car has Koni adjustable shocks and struts both front and rear. These are rebuildable units. just ship them off to Koni when rebuild time comes. If you decide you want the ride a little softer for your driving style. the Koni. front and rear. are adjustable! For a street car there is no better suspension.

Wheels are the correct flat 6 later style ring capped Fuchs. These are the real deal! They have been restored and completely polished by Al Reed. They are jewels! Michelin primacy tires are the original 'performance' size equipment and give the car a very comfortable ride with forgiving performance. They are not too sticky yet. if you get into trouble. they have a very reliable and controllable catch.   1974 is also the first year to come with Aluminum rear trailing arms which was a carry over from Porsche's RS race cars. With the lighter calipers . trailing arms. and magnesium wheels the car is very fast off the line and light in the turns. Less axle weight makes for great suspension control over rough roads. When the going gets rough this light yellow car really shines.

The paint that you see on the vehicle is mostly factory original. The only panels requiring full re-spray have been the drivers front fender and the drivers door.   I have looked within both panels and I can not see any dents at all(I had the doors apart to re-grease and oil all of the mechanisms). so I am assuming that they were painted to repair a scratch. My plans for the future have been to chemically strip the panels with oven cleaner(this works very well and leaves behind the original paint) to see what the condition of the original paint is.   Because it has been one of my driver cars. and focusing my attention on other parts of the car. I have left this untouched from the way that I received it. The re-spray and paint match was done very well and it took me months of studying over the car to even realize that they had been resprayed. The car has only been on the road for less than 10 years since 1974 and has been garage kept by me and out of the sun in storage. This is a driver quality factory paint job that has been taken great care of and shows!

The glass is all original. The windshield is Sigla. All seals are believed to be the originals. The door glass outer seals have shrunken about a half inch from the ends but has not been a bother. The rear glass seal at the bottom corners is beginning to show age. None of the window seals leak. The targa top will be in need of a reconditioning if you are planning to park it in the rain. Within my ownership the car has seen rain less than a handful of times. so for me the targa top has been for driving on the highway and for in the sun. The Targa top works flawlessly and folds up easily to fit in the trunk.

The interior is beautiful! The seats are original. The front seats have just been professionally restored with the highest quality reproduction seat covers. covers made specifically for the year by autos international. The carpet is believed to be all original and is in great shape. The dash is flawless. All gauges are functioning perfectly. The clock keeps perfect time! The fuel gauge is accurate. The radio is most aesthetically pleasing that I could find. It has a cd player and an aux input for your I-pod. I ran the cord for the aux input so that it comes out from between the carpet and emergency brake. Also. I ran a usb cord along with it which is powered regardless of ignition switch to charge a phone. Together with a couple of modernizations. the interior is very comfortable.

I have upgraded the car with an alarm. The way in which I did this was without drilling a single hole that would ever be seen or altering the cars electrical at all. Each electrical connection was done with a piggy back connector on all terminals such as the parking lights. power. horn. etc. Removal for a concours restoration down the line will not require any real work. I installed a garage door opener into the car which is wired to an original headlight washer switch. not original to the car. which I put into an original blank slot in the dash(the car had a blank filling the car for the non-optioned car). So. when pulling up to your home you can just push the switch on the dash. If you have two garages. a second switch can easily be placed in a second blank area. Both are located underneath and to the left and right of the tachometer. In addition to the switch in the dash. I ran circuit to the alarm so the garage door opener can be activated with the vehicle's alarm remote! Another upgrade was a drivers power door lock(passenger's is still an option to have installed). disarm the alarm and the drivers door unlocks for you. arm it. and it locks. These are a few things common in modern cars that I adore; an alarm to protect the vehicle . power door locks. and a garage door opener. I believe that most everyone can appreciate these things. too.

I have placed 15k miles on this car since I have owned it. I started my relationship with the car by pulling it apart and expertly going through replacing seals. oiling and re-greasing. adjusting things. and getting it up a reliable driver(it's what I do for a living. having owned a VW and Porsche service and restoration shop for over 15 years).

I have not had a single breakdown in this car. Nothing. This is an amazing car that has had an amazing life and has been in the right hands with it's two owners. I have a lot of respect for the original owner in his choices of exterior color. Interior color. Targa model. S brakes. Koni suspension. upgrade to front oil cooler. 3. 0 engine. etc. and for his obvious love and devotion to the care of the car. Being a non-galvanized body Porsche with almost zero rust and still adorning most of it's original paint. this is a very rare car! I hate to see it go but the time has come to where I must move on and pick another car to restore. I project that this car will be very rewarding to the new owner. I would love to talk on the phone and personally describe the car and what I can foresee the car needing for maintenance and proper upkeep. The bare bones are there and the car is set up for proper usage by an enthusiastic driver such as myself. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have. or with any interesting trades for older Porsches.

Peace. /p>

I also have an original. complete. correct for the year of this car. 1974 2. 7L engine in Los angeles as well. that can be sold with the car. seperately. a different deal). If the winning bidder would like the 2. 7. it is available in exchange for the 3. 0. but the 2. 7 needs a rebuild. I was told that the 2. 7L developed an unknown knock. I know no history of the 2. 7 to help with any diagnosis of it's condition.

This is my ad from my ebay listing ten years ago. If anyone knows the owner of the car, please forward my info. I would love to buy my old car back. I raced across the desert in this car to my son's birth. A seriously meaningful car to me. I am easy to find in Google.
Thanks!
